About a decade ago, when I asked an interior designer what the best sectional sofa was, she warned me about ones that curve: “They only work in the space you have today—once you move, you’re out of luck.” So for years I took her advice and shied away from couches with corners, too scared they’d dominate my current space and mess up the future floor plan of a down-the-road apartment—one I hadn’t even starting looking for yet. What I didn’t know then is that choosing the best sectional sofa is really about picking a sectional by size.

Now I’m older and wiser, and I know that sectionals come in all shapes and sizes—and finding one for any kind of room is a total reality, no matter how much space (or cash) you have. So, please, learn from my mistake and treat yourself to a couch you’re comfortable with These are the best sectional sofas for any size home.

Small Sectionals

Photography by Aaron Bengochea

Just because you live in a studio doesn’t mean you can’t have a sofa that takes a turn. (This couple does!) Each of these options measures up to 6 feet or less, meaning there’s plenty of space to cuddle up without feeling like your sectional is the only piece of furniture in the room.

Medium Sectionals

Photography by Brittany Ambridge

A one-bedroom apartment or midsize living room provides plenty of space to stretch your legs—each of these offerings is less than 8 feet long—and show off some personality with fabric and pattern. For example, a lilac velvet sectional gives off a luxe vibe (even if it only costs $1,100), while a dark squishy version would go great in your gaming den.

Large Sectionals

Families and singles alike will appreciate the roominess of a nearly 10-foot sectional. But with great scale comes great (design) responsibility: The bigger the sofa, the more visual and physical real estate it will take up. A neutral color works best as a base—then pack it with pillows to show off some personality.

Extra-Large Sectionals

Okay, okay, I know what I just said about keeping it neutral—but in the case of an almost-12-foot sectional, bigger and bolder is better. For example, a salmon-colored option sets the tone for the entire room—and has enough seating that no one will have to crane their neck during movie night. Similarly, a blue velvet is the perfect welcome after (or during?) a long day of Zoom calls. Or if a white sofa doesn’t bring you instant calm, then this one’s impressively low price tag ($1,230!) just might.

It seems like all of our favorite design studios and retailers have dropped new sectional sofas and side tables over the past few months if not days. To help you get a handle on all of the powder-coated aluminum, weather-resistant wicker, and plush Sunbrella-covered cushions fresh on the market, we plucked the most noteworthy brand additions and organized each by newness, below—and there’s more to come. If summer soirees and backyard barbecues aren’t already on your mind, they will be shortly.

Serena & Lily

Courtesy of Serena & Lily

Stripes are going strong in Serena & Lily’s outdoor furniture introductions. Pair the graphic Sundial chaise with, say, a tiny wicker table meant to hold an umbrella and perhaps a glass of Sancerre, and you’ve created the ultimate beach house vibe.

Article

Summer is for lounging, and Article’s new Lubek collection is making us want to read, nap, and repeat. Low-to-the-ground acacia wood platform frames give the pieces a simple, modern look that will never go out of style. Plus it’s tough to find quality upholstered outdoor seating for less than $799.

Neighbor

Courtesy of Neighbor

DTC furniture brand Neighbor recently launched the XY collection, and we’re loving the earthy palette. Tubular steel with a powder-coated finish makes the pieces durable and easy to clean. To keep things comfy, the chairs come with a removable cushion made of quick-dry foam and fadeproof Sunbrella fabric. Fun fact: The table base also doubles as an umbrella stand.

Desigh Within Reach

Courtesy of DWR

Designer Gabriel Tan was inspired by the idea of creating “soft islands” that feel like private getaways, which explains the rounded edges and soothing shapes in his Softlands outdoor collection for DWR. The chair, which also comes in sofa and chaise longue sizes, is made of teak, all-weather rope, and removable cushions with quick-dry foam filling and UV-resistant Sunbrella fabric. The coffee table also comes in a side table size and is made from ceramic stone and slatted teak.

Crate & Barrel

Courtesy of Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel’s new Anguilla outdoor collection offers seating in every size imaginable. From a seven-piece U-shaped configuration to a single lounge chair, the assortment could find a place in nearly any backyard. Durable solid teak frames and weather- and fade-resistant acrylic fabric mean you’ll be able to enjoy it for many summers to come.

CB2

Courtesy of CB2

Even though these are brand-new pieces, they may look slightly familiar; that’s because the same design was used in an indoor bouclé version introduced a few years back. Both are from CB2’s collaborations with Ross Cassidy, and we’re so into the wicker version that we’d consider using it indoors, too.

Arhaus

Courtesy of Arhaus

We’re loving the Togo-esque look of these new laid-back loungers. The low-slung seats are upholstered in bleach-cleanable, fade-resistant, anti-mildew, and eco-friendly fabric, with frames made from 100% marine-grade engineered hardwood that’s reinforced with steel hardware fittings. You can configure the different sizes to create a sectional or just enjoy a seat for one.

West Elm

Courtesy of West Elm

Does it get any more coastal grandma than West Elm’s new Westport collection? Made from handwoven all-weather recycled wicker, it basically turns any backyard into a scene from Nancy Meyers’s Something’s Gotta Give. The wide arms double as a surface for drinks or snacks, setting you up for prime relaxation.

RH

Courtesy of RH

We’re digging the tubular shapes in RH’s new Vigo teak collection. The cushions are sold separately and offered in a whopping 73 fabric options. You can also choose from natural or aged teak, both of which are “from forests regulated by Indonesia’s Sustainable Forest Management system, designed to promote the sustainability of future teak harvests.”

“I don’t know if you know this, but apartments in New York are tiny,” jokes Ryan Dziadul, vice president of PR and business development at Jonathan Adler. So when he and his husband (and their new dog, GoGo) moved into a new roomier apartment in Manhattan’s Midtown East neighborhood, they were thrilled to see it came with a terrace, which they planned to use as another room.

Photography by Ryan Dziadul

The only problem? The outdoor space is only about 4 feet wide, and even though they wanted it to be where they’d sip their morning coffee, eat dinner, and unwind at the end of the day, a traditional round outdoor umbrella just wouldn’t fit. Enter the half-round outdoor umbrella, which Dziadul’s husband found on Amazon and for only $60. “I did not know there was such a thing,” he admits. “But we’ve had it for two weeks and it’s already a game changer.”

Photography by Ryan Dziadul

Now the pair can dine alfresco even when it’s drizzling, and when the sun hits the terrace during the day, they can lounge in the shade. With the twist of a knob, Dziadul can easily put the umbrella up or down (though he says on his particular one, the directions are backward), and it’s sturdy enough to withstand New York’s windy winter and prespring showers.

You don’t need a tiny terrace to use one in your own space. The half-round shape is ideal next to fences and walls or in cramped outdoor spaces. Dziadul’s favorite feature? The sunny orange color, though it’s available in five other shades, too. “I like to think it’s a treat for the neighbors across the street,” he says. “It’s not only a gift for us, but a gift for them.”

We get it, sofas are expensive—but not without good reason. This piece of furniture is the central hub of the living room, and these days it’s more than just a go-to gathering spot for movie nights. (Yours might also be the preferred place to take work calls and meetings, in addition to the occasional midday nap, or perhaps a makeshift guest room with a secret mattress hidden inside.) So calling it a worthy investment is an understatement. But if full price is too big of a pill for you to swallow—and hunting for the best sofa under $500 sounds like more trouble than it’s worth—we scrounged up every deal we could find happening right now.

Below is our running list of the best sofa deals from editor-favorite furniture brands. We’re clocking the most noteworthy savings, from seasonal sitewide sales to one-off promos, and plan to update as we spot more.

One reviewer describes it as “simple and versatile for a limited space.” Another adds, “I was looking for a sofa that fit my small living room and needed the right dimensions. I saw this modular sofa and fell in love instantly. I like how this is low so I won’t fear my toddlers falling off the seat. It’s also light enough to shift around.”

As enthusiasts of the modular furniture brand, we’re totally locked into Floyd’s sale calendar—the Detroit-based retailer often hosts sitewide sales during which sofas and sectionals are discounted a little more. Unsurprisingly, our latest check-in revealed deals on its best-selling sofas, love seats, and chaise styles; they’re once again 30% off. We’d go for the quasi-customizable Sink Down. Much like the Form, this latest iteration offers a slew of stain-resistant performance fabrics that make it kid- and pet-friendly. It’s also one of the best deep-seat sofas out there.

Did we mention it’s petproof? One reviewer writes, “A simple Google search for some catproof furniture led me to Inside Weather, and, boy, did I hit the jackpot. I love both the comfort and the looks, and my kitties love the comfort but aren’t interested in using it as a scratching piece.”

Through February 19, McGee & Co. will be offering up to 25% off its sought-after homewares, from case goods to tabletop. Set it up adjacent to a sofa in living spaces or park one it a spacious entryway.

15% Off Sitewide at Neighbor

pb big sur sofa
105-Inch Big Sur Square Arm Upholstered Sofa, Pottery Barn ($3,239 was $3,599)

Pottery Barn’s catalog is packed with sofas and sectionals, and a quick scan of its up to 20% off sale in the category reveals several excellent options. We like the Big Sur, a casual and endlessly customizable sofa that comes in smart colors like terracotta (one of the on-sale fabrics). With generous proportions, this one’s made for lounging.

43% Off Balboa Sofa at Serena & Lily

Furn_Balboa_Sofa_Perennials
Balboa Sofa, Serena & Lily ($2,000 was $3,498)
Shop

Serena & Lily’s Presidents’ Day Sale seems to be focused on dining, but there’s one very chic sofa on sale right now: the Balboa. It’s 43% off, which means the price is marked down by $1,500. The Balboa’s frame is handcrafted of solid beech and hand-wrapped in rattan, and the interior frame, seat, and back cushions are upholstered in hardy Perennials performance fabric.

20% Off Orders $1,000+ at Sixpenny

Sixpenny Gabriel Sofa
Gabriel Sectional, Sixpenny ($3,679 was $4,599)
Shop

The rare sale at Sixpenny should be acknowledged as a holiday. (Its luxe sofas are editor-tested and -approved.) February 17–22, take 20% off orders of $1,000 or more with the code HUMMINGBIRD.

20% Off Target Threshold x Studio McGee Woodland Hills Sofa

target mcgee sofa
Threshold x Studio McGee Woodland Hills Sofa, Target ($640 was $800)
Shop

There aren’t many Target brand sofas included in the retailer’s 30% off sale, but this one caught our eye, by Domino favorite Studio McGee. The width is a slim 72.5 inches, which makes it perfect for smaller spaces, and the gray upholstery paired with an all-wood frame keeps things warm and cozy. Plus it’s hard to find quality sofas under $1,000, and at this price? Would take hours of searching.

Extra 40% Off Sale Items at Urban Outfitters

UO sofa
Aria Upholstered Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($540 was $1,299)
Shop

Through February 19, Urban Outfitters’s sale section is an extra 40% off and stocked with more than 600 items. In addition to a couple of highly rated sofas, some products from the best-selling Mason collection are included. The additional discount applies in cart, by the way. The uncontested hero of any living room setup is the coffee table. Beyond serving as a spot for your favorite design books or morning cappuccino, this workhorse staple can completely change how a room functions—especially when you’re short on square footage and need a surface designed to work overtime. There are a few key questions to ask yourself when looking for the best coffee tables for small spaces: Can it be easily moved out of the way when guests arrive? Will there still be room for all my living room lounging essentials? How well does it disguise clutter? To help you on this shopping journey, we scoured the Internet for streamlined styles that do just that (and more).

Take a look at our favorites, below. (If you need help pairing it with some size-conscious seating, check out our guide to the best sofas for small spaces.)

Our Favorite Coffee Tables for Small Spaces

Coffee Tables With Built-In Shelving

Tiered coffee tables are a great option for those who need additional space. The bottom shelf acts as a catchall for everything from magazines to mail to remotes, while the top can display all the cute stuff—like a sculptural vase or an artful candle

Ottoman Coffee Tables

If you truly lack the space for a weightier furniture buy, try investing in a midsize ottoman that can function as everything from an easily movable footrest to extra seating for a table—all while adding an extra layer of textural character, whether that be by cozy upholstery or posh details. The only accessory you’ll need to complete its coffee-table transformation is an extra-large book or tray to top it with for added surface stability.

Glass Coffee Tables

When your space is cramped, visual clutter is just as noticeable as a mess. Enter glass and acrylic. An ideal alternative to heavy wood, the transparent material promises clear sight lines. Even a large table will belie its bulk thanks to a frame with vanishing lines.

Coffee Tables With Secret Storage

If a coffee table with built-in shelving is no match for your hoard of living room stuff, we suggest trying a secret-storage style to conceal your not-so-pretty essentials within its depths.

Nesting Coffee Tables

The best nesting tables are all about versatility: Keep them together for movie night or spread them out when friends come over for cocktails—or a candlelit dinner for two.

Narrow Coffee Tables

While the best coffee tables for small spaces aren’t necessarily a size play, certain square-footage limitations call for the straight and narrow. If you live in a shoebox, we culled together a few strategically streamlined styles to suit. (Two of these long boys even boast tiered storage bonus.)

When you own a cabin in Tillamook, Oregon, the ultimate luxury is having a hot tub. “I feel like the hot tub culture here is pretty strong,” says Karie Higgins. The weather has a lot to do with it: It’s rainy and chilly for a huge chunk of the year. It wasn’t long after Higgins turned her home on the Wilson River into an Airbnb that she had guests making comments like, “It’d just be so amazing if you had a hot tub as well.” “And we were like, we think so, too,” Higgins says.

The problem was finding something that would jell with the rest of the home’s Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. Higgins wasn’t about to stick a 40-jet, plastic-lined tub on the deck and call it a day. “I felt like it needed to be something that was more natural and minimal than that,” she says. As most things go now, Higgins was served the perfect solution via Instagram ad. A new company out of Canada called Goodland that makes a cedar-clad wood-burning tub caught her eye. She got on the preorder list ASAP.

Now Higgins admits her family uses their hot tub even in the summertime. “You come out of the river, hop in there—it’s amazing,” she says. Soak in these basic facts, pros, and cons about Goodland’s hot tub to see if it’s right for your outdoor space.

How does it work?

Like a wood stove you might find inside a cabin, Goodland’s tub gets its warmth from you making a fire and using the energy produced by the flames to produce heat. Luckily, it doesn’t take a ton of materials to get it going. After you’ve filled the basin with water, you’ll need paper, an armful of dry kindling, matches, and some firewood to get started. It typically takes around 90 minutes to heat the tub up, and once you’re in, you can let the fire smolder during your soak or add more logs as necessary to keep it going. It’s a hands-on process, but that’s exactly the point. “I just love the fact that it’s slow-burning,” says Higgins. “You’re out there stoking it, picking up bits of kindling from the land—it’s a lovely ritual. It’s not just like, ‘Okay, let’s jump in the tub.’”

What does it cost?

The hot tub and everything that comes with it (from the red cedar slats to the drainage kit) is listed at $6,295. While there are certainly cheaper hot tub options on the market, there are also more expensive ones. On Goodland’s FAQ, the brand argues that the cost encompasses the quality of materials and craftsmanship. For instance, the aluminum interior is 6061 marine aluminum, a more expensive grade due to its corrosion resistance.

What’s the delivery time?

Right now, Goodland boasts a three- to five-week-long delivery wait. The tub itself is delivered by a truck on a pallet and placed at the curb of your property. The whole thing weighs around 125 pounds, so anywhere from two to four people should be able to move it to your desired location. Then there is some further assembly required. “Basically, you screw all the big, metal components like the chimney together and put the cedar planks around the side,” explains Higgins. “It’s a little bit of a process, but it was relatively easy.”

Where should you put it?

Knowing that the river can flood in the winter, Higgins and her husband didn’t want to put their tub too close to the water, but they still wanted it to feel totally separate from the house. “We’ve got it sort of beyond our firepit, so you’re out there. You feel like you’re by yourself,” she says.

How many people can fit in it?

For Higgins, the most comfortable arrangement has been two adults. Or if the kids are around, one adult and three little ones.

Do you need to change out the water?

You don’t need to drain the hot tub with each use. Goodland suggests the water can last for up to two weeks. But in Higgins’s case, where a variety of bathers are frequently soaking in the tub, she changes it with each visit. “The lovely thing is it only takes an hour to fill it back up,” she says.

My living room refresh felt destined from the start. When I moved into my Brooklyn apartment in March 2019, I was determined to have a conversation sofa setup, where two couches face each other. After five years of living in Manhattan, I finally had enough room for more than a love seat. The only problem was, I couldn’t find a suitable second sofa to face the one I already had, a reliable and super-comfortable gray three-seater from Article. So for two years, I settled on a mint-colored Chiclet reproduction from Industry West that worked in the space but wasn’t 100 percent perfect.

I was grateful for my safe, sunny living room during the pandemic, but after sitting in the same space with the same view surrounded by the same almost perfect furniture arrangement, I made the choice to switch it up. I wanted friends to be able to pile onto one ginormous sectional, and was also ready for a more cohesive color palette to complement two living room design decisions I very much do not regret: a multicolored mural painted by a friend and my custom coffee table.

The decision to rework the space was an easy one, but actually picking a new sofa? Certainly not. It took me one full calendar year to decide. I was working at a major furniture retailer at the time and have always believed in the paradox of choice when it came to decorating my own home, that being exposed to limitless possibilities (in this case, sofas) meant it was harder, not easier, to choose. Keep reading to get familiar with the top contenders, why they ended up on the reject list and not in my apartment, and how I feel about the winner today.

West Elm Harmony Sectional

Build Your Own Harmony Sectional, West Elm ($680 – $2,399)

I went back and forth on a few West Elm styles, some more modern, others more plush. This one ended up being my preferred shape, even though I had previously sworn off sectionals. I used the early months to narrow down essentials like size, a new layout, and color palette. West Elm was a great place to start because it has so many silhouettes and upholstery options. It soon became clear that I was gravitating toward a more mature, neutral palette and decided to pursue a search solely for brown sectionals, considering jute, camel, and yellow rugs. My West Elm pick was put on the back burner as I began to further scour the Internet.

Rejected for: Casual silhouette and large size.

CB2 Perimeter Sofa in Luca Espresso

Perimeter Sofa in Luca Espresso, CB2 ($2,299)

I’ve always been a fan of CB2’s trendier shapes. I didn’t want any sofa, I wanted a unique sofa. But where CB2 gained points for shape, it fell short in fabric options. The only brown upholstery available was velvet, which felt a touch glam for the vibe I was looking to achieve. The exact sectional I was considering wasn’t available anymore, but I also fell deeply in love with its Perimeter sofa, enough to consider ditching my sectional plans (a big deal). If I was conducting my search today, I definitely would have considered the Chale 4-piece sectional and Terrain 5-piece sectional, too.

Rejected for: Lack of upholstery options.

Interior Define Lukas 3-Seat Bumper Sectional

Shop

Lukas 3-Seat Bumper Sectional, Interior Define ($2,836)

I have an Interior Define pull-out sofa in my guest bedroom that I adore. It was ordered and delivered in the thick of the pandemic with friendly and frequent emails updating me on the status of the custom-made sofa, which created deep brand trust. The brand had just opened a store in my neighborhood, so of course I went to scout the options. And though most of my stipulations mentioned here include color and style, the most important factor when buying a sofa to me is how comfortable it is. I love to sit cross-legged and generally prefer to be horizontal while relaxing at home. This Interior Define design checked all my boxes, visually and physically. I was even willing to overlook the velvet upholstery! Then…after I got multiple quotes from my design expert at the company and had even typed my credit card information into the checkout page, I pulled the plug, not wanting to wait the 25-week delivery ETA. Just weeks later, it became clear customers were struggling to have their orders fulfilled, so I was extra-relieved I didn’t hit “buy.”

Rejected for: Wait time.

Secondhand From Kaiyo

Sofas photo
Shop

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Haywood Chaise and a Half Sectional, Kaiyo (now $2,447)

It was at around the nine-month mark that I started to feel desperate. I love vintage but tend to buy storage pieces and various accessories, not sofas that require a full upholstery job and multiple delivery orchestrations. The thought of making another decision on fabric already felt like too much, but I indulged myself in an evening scroll on Kaiyo anyway. What I found was a wide selection of very cool silhouettes that made me question why anyone buys anything new. Ultimately, I knew I didn’t have the bandwidth to take on an upholstery project, so it was onto the next!

Rejected for: Too much DIY required.

The Winner: Hem Palo Sectional

modern sofa
Shop

Palo Corner Sofa Left in Brown-Black, Hem ($5,349)

To recap, I wanted a sofa that could help make my living room feel more grounded and grown-up, which included a modern, low profile and brown upholstery that was also low-maintenance. It had to be deep and comfortable, and I didn’t want to wait 1 million years for it to arrive. I don’t remember how I finally found the Palo sectional by Hem, but I do remember immediately making an appointment to stop by the brand’s showroom in SoHo to see and sit.

The fabric was different than any I had encountered—a mix of 70 percent virgin wool and 30 percent viscose that wasn’t supersoft to the touch but durable and the exact color I had been imagining in my head. I fell hard for the exposed bar detail and modular design. It was firmer than any of the other contenders, but the shape was incredible, and it was the ideal length. The price was in the right range, and it even had a design element not on my list: an open chaise on the right side that made the expanded footprint of my living room feel more open. I purchased it 48 hours later, and it was assembled in my living room in less than a month. I paired it with a solid Nordic Knots Grand rug in chestnut, a decision made in the span of a few hours.

Photography by Alyssa Clough | The Hem Palo sectional in my apartment.

Would I recommend spending a whole year deciding on a piece of furniture? Absolutely not. Do I appreciate my new living room every single day? Yes. Did I question everything when Sarah Ellison dropped her chocolate Float sectional days before mine was delivered? Obviously, yes. But in a world of fast furniture and instantaneous deliveries, I’m glad that I gave myself the time and space to invest in the right piece of furniture that I intend to keep for years to come.

We’re usually the first to advise readers to do their due diligence—confirming quality materials, hardware, and finishes—before investing in furniture from Amazon. That’s because while there are plenty of affordable alternatives to high-end designs hiding among the e-tailer’s assortment, we often find that, after considerable research, most would-be scores are too good to be true. Typically, we’ll skip anything that isn’t from a preferred storefront (Kartell, Yamazaki, Stone & Beam, and the like) or lacks a bevy of positive reviews. This slatted dining table doesn’t land in either category, but since it already wound up in a few of your carts, we had to give it a closer look.

Simontal Round Wood Dining Table

Simontal Round Wood Table with fluted pillar base
Simontal Round Wood Dining Table, Amazon ($479 was $589)
Shop

A mere six shoppers contribute to its rare-for-furniture 4.7-star rating, but we stopped questioning their purchasing decision after realizing nearly half are accompanied with impressive photos of the piece. It looks far more stunning than the listing’s renderings. After poring over the product details, plus being charmed by the natural wood grain and fluted base as seen in real-life captures, we can confidently say this isn’t a risky buy—and here’s why.

For one, the table is sold in three versatile sizes—all at a height of 29.9 inches—which means it’s a great fit for small spaces. But that doesn’t compromise its roominess; one owner, who went with the largest option, was able to comfortably fit four chairs around it. We’ve also deduced that the base is a compilation of solid strips of ash and the round top appears to be an engineered construction. It ships in two boxes, and assembly is “supereasy,” one buyer writes; just a few screws, included, join the top and pillar bottom together.

To note: A couple of comments do express concern about the strength of the finish (coasters are recommended!). Most are impressed by its sturdiness, though. “I am very satisfied with the price!” one reviewer enthusiastically shares. “It looks very high-end,” another adds.

In fact, after looking at several similar styles from retailers like Lulu and Georgia, West Elm, and Burke Decor, they were all priced plenty higher—as in, more than double—despite the fact that a couple also featured veneer tabletops. There’s even fewer compact choices, too, making this Amazon pick far more multifunctional (as evidenced by one shopper tapping it for their entryway). Unlike most of our favorites from the e-commerce giant, however, you’ll have to wait a little longer than two days for it to arrive. But as multiple shoppers already note, it’s “worth it,” especially coupled with the $50 coupon. Who doesn’t love a luxe look for less?

Scroll through our top picks to find the best couch covers for you—they’re sure to give your furniture a new lease on life after just one trip to the laundry room.

Our Favorites

Best Overall: Comfortworks Pure Linen Sofa Cover

linen couch cover
Karlstad 2 Seater Sofa Cover in Linen, Comfortworks ($309)
Shop

Material: 100% linen | Universal: No | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: Based on brands such as IKEA, Pottery Barn, and Crate & Barrel

What we like:

  • Sizes available for 34 different brands
  • Each cover is labeled with a tag indicating the corresponding cushion or armrest
  • Easily washes and returns to original color

Worth noting:

  • For brands not listed, you’ll need to pay extra for a custom cover

Why we chose it: Made from 100% linen, these custom couch covers are durable, washable, and stay put without sliding.

With Comfortworks’s Pure Linen line, DIYer Sara Le finally has the white sofa of her dreams. More than a year after purchasing her slipcover, she confirms it has held up beautifully in her active household. “I have two kids who eat and play on our sofa every day; I can’t get them off it,” she notes. “Spills and stains most definitely happen—I’m talking orange juice, blueberries, Cheetos fingers—but I don’t stress about it because I know the cover is washable and so durable. It always comes out bright white all over again!” Her favorite part, though, may be the invisible zippers that prevent sliding.

Best Value: Easy-Going Stretch Sofa Slipcover

gray sofa cover
Easy-Going Stretch Sofa Slipcover, Amazon ($30)
Shop

Material: Polyester-and-spandex blend | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: 4-seater sofa, chair, love seat, oversize chair, oversize love seat, oversize sofa, sofa

What we like:

  • Superstretchy
  • Less than $30 for a full sofa size
  • Ships with anti-slip foam to prevent slipping

Worth noting:

  • Only 1 universal piece (measure carefully!)

Why we chose it: How can you argue with 80,000-plus positive reviews?

Shoppers can’t seem to say enough good things about this affordable cover. No matter how oddly shaped (such as one reviewer’s IKEA Kivik L-shaped sofa) a couch is or if it reclines, this product refuses to slip or move out of place despite being one piece. One of the biggest issues with slipcovers is the fact that users are always readjusting to keep the formfitting look, but this product apparently refuses to budge. Plus as one of 87,000-plus happy customer notes, it “doesn’t look or feel cheap,” despite the low price point. Other benefits listed by owners include its resistance to pet fur and stains, earning it 4.3 stars on Amazon and the number-one bestseller spot in love seat slipcovers.

Best Tie-Front: Farmhouse Basketweave Sofa Slipcover

Tie front faux linen slip cover
Shop

Material: Polyester | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Loose | Sizes: 74 to 96 inches

What we like:

  • Simple construction is easy to set up
  • Ties on the front add charming detail
  • Thick fabric hides most patterns or stains

Worth noting:

  • Reviewers say it wrinkles easily
  • Polyester fabric is less breathable than linen

Why we chose it: For a more traditional slipcover look (read: cottage vibes), this cover is thick enough to hide any pattern underneath.

This faux linen couch cover from Target is thick enough to hide even the wildest colors and patterns, and its classic ties work just as well in a new traditionalist’s space with English cottage vibes as a modernist room that’s dominated by clean lines. The only drawback? Made with polyester, the basket-weave slipcover isn’t quite as breathable as linen, but it’s still worth every penny. A few runners-up in this category we think are worth mentioning: the IKEA Uppland cover and this Khaki Stripe

Best Texture: Kekou Stretch Sofa Cover

Beige Couch Cover
Kekou Stretch Sofa Cover, Amazon ($40)
Shop

Material: Polyester blend | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: Extra-large, large, medium, small

What we like:

  • Quality stitching
  • Soft, textured fabric resists pet fur and dirt
  • Anti-slip foam rods included for a tight, slip-free fit

Worth noting:

  • Colors may vary from online images

Why we chose it: An elastic, wrinkle-resistant couch cover that stretches to fit most sizes.

This magic sofa cover is a bargain for anyone who doesn’t want to bother with multiple pieces of fabric (and is also another budget-friendly Amazon buy). Sold as one elastic-edged piece, each stretches to fit a variety of shapes—the jacquardlike fabric is available in 20 colors, and sizes range from small to extra-extra-large—and comes with a foam rod that can be placed between cushions for a smoother look. We love that it isn’t your typical faux suede; one reviewer notes it is “quality made and has quality stitching,” and others have said it has yet to show signs of wear, resisting pills and tears.

Best Stripes: Breakwater Bay Stripe Box Cushion Slipcover

black and white striped couch cover
Breakwater Bay Stripe Box Cushion Slipcover, Wayfair ($65 was $80)
Shop

Material: Cotton | Universal: Box cushion | Fitted or loose: Loose | Sizes: 72 to 96 inches

What we like:

  • Made with 100% cotton
  • Nautical stripe in 7 beachy colors
  • Machine washable and pet friendly

Worth noting:

  • 1 piece, so you may have to do some tucking

Why we chose it: A tie-front slipcover with a little seaside pizzazz.

With the correct box-cushion sofa, this Cabana-inspired cover is just the ticket if you’re looking to add a chic pattern to your sofa without having to commit to a particular style or color. But as much as we love the stripes—you have your choice of seven ecru and color combos to choose from, including the classic black or navy blue—we love the fact that this cover is as breezy to take care of as it looks. “Easy to put on, take off, and wash. Helped me change the entire look of a room for a fraction of a new sofa!” one shopper writes. Another adds it was tapped for a room where kids and pets alike frequent often specifically. “Resisted stains (no just spills yet, but so far so good for all else) and scratches.” Bonus: It’s 19% off right now at Wayfair for just $65.

Best Loose Fit: Magic Linen Couch Cover

Rust Linen Couch Cover Draped Over Sofa with Pillow
MagicLinen Linen Sofa Cover, Etsy ($78 was $98)
Shop

Material: Linen | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Loose | Sizes: 12 options

What we like:

  • Stonewashed linen fabric
  • Sturdy stitching
  • Available in a range of colors
  • Oeko-Tex certified

Worth noting:

  • Tends to wrinkle
  • Will require repositioning from time to time

Why we chose it: If you’re looking for a no-fuss cover you can just toss over the couch, this is it.

For the furniture equivalent of a Netflix-and-chill session, drape your sofa in this Etsy favorite, which blends sturdy fabric and quality stitching. Available in a range of saturated colors, from olive to mustard, the boho-chic linen coverlet is large enough to fit over both your king bedspread and sofa, yet it’s a more durable option than just tossing on a throw for the same effect.

The cover will need repositioning from time to time (since it’s not tied or zipped on), and beware that linen does have a tendency to wrinkle, but lots of people embrace this aesthetic, as that’s the natural beauty of the fabric. And don’t just take our word for it: This storefront is backed by an Oeko-Tex certification and has completed more than 1,000 positive sales.

Best for L-Shaped Sectionals: Ebern Designs L-Shaped Sofa Slipcover

Navy Blue velvet couch cover
L-Shaped Sofa Slipcover , Ebern Designs ($42 was $130)
Shop

Material: Polyester-spandex blend | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: 1 size fits all

What we like:

  • Pet-friendly
  • 2 pieces to cover the main sofa and chaise
  • Strapless elastic corners

Worth noting:

  •  No individual cushion covers

Why we chose it: A straightforward, hassle-free cover that’ll universally stretch across all sorts of chaises.

This well-reviewed cover for L-shaped sectionals comes in 17 colors in a textured polyester-spandex blend that repels pet fur. It’s also stain resistant, machine washable, and affordably priced (in fact, it’s often discounted and currently 25% off). Its prowess lies in simplicity, with just two pieces designed to fully stretch over any style.

One reviewer comments, “Great fit, nice stretch, keeps everything tight. Easy to install; even after sitting and getting up off the couch, there is no wrinkle issue, especially if you correctly apply the foam rolls—the cover will not pop out after you tuck it in the couch! Love it; will be ordering more colors!” Another writes, “It’s perfect! It fits our couch and is exactly as described. Much, much better than the thousands of blankets we had to cover it with to protect it from our crazy puppies.”

Best for IKEA: Bemz IKEA Sofa Cover

gingham slipcover
Söderhamn Sofa Cover in Check Linen, Bemz ($649)
Shop

Material: Linen, corduroy, wool-look, velvet, recycled material | Universal: No | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: 30-plus IKEA models

What we like:

  • Compatible with 30-plus IKEA models
  • Wide range of color options
  • Lots of material options

Worth noting:

  • Will take about a month to arrive

Why we chose it: These covers completely transform an IKEA sofa into a luxurious, custom-looking piece.

Don’t part ways with your starter sofa just yet. Bemz slipcovers are compatible with 30-plus IKEA models and come in a loose and regular fit, as well as a range of fabrics (cotton, linen, velvet, and more) in nearly every color you can think of. Made in Europe to maintain quality and minimize waste, they’re even available in a 100% recycled line. That said, they are custom-sewn to order, so expect to wait approximately three to four weeks for the cover to arrive. And the company recently launched new fabrics in bouclé stripes, linen gingham, and cotton hemp just in time to offer both visual texture and a warm, cozy feel to get through winter.

Best for Pets: Molly Mutt Couch Cover

Molly Mutt Cover chevron pattern in gray
I’m a Realist Couch Cover, Molly Mutt
Shop

Material: Cotton canvas | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: 2-seater, 3-seater, 3-seater XL

What we like:

  • Nonskid backing and discreet anchors
  • Quilted canvas easily brushes clean
  • Machine washable

Worth noting:

  • Less aesthetically pleasing than our other picks

Why we chose it: Couches and dogs are…not the best combo, but this machine washable cover keeps fabric clean and pets cozied up next to you.

Here’s a quick solution for furry companions that love to sprawl out on the sofa as much as you do. A nonskid backing combines with discreet anchors to keep this cover in place no matter how restless your pooch is. But the biggest draw has to be the no-fuss, quilted cotton canvas material, which brushes clean with little effort and can be washed just as easily. It’s not as luxe as Belgian linen or soft velvet, but with destructive pets around, this cover will certainly protect your investment couch underneath. Reviewers also rave about the brand’s outstanding customer service, as well as the quality construction.

A pet-friendly runner-up: Pottery Barn’s pet throw. It’s available in three sizes (30-by-30, 30-by-52, and 52-by-100) and the same performance fabrics that cover the brand’s sofa. It offers a seamless extra layer of protection, particularly if you go with a matching material if your sofa happens to be from the mass home store, too.

This brand is on our radar—we haven’t had any personal experience with it yet—and we’re intrigued by its promise to provide a custom upholstered look for $300 or less. The slipcovers come in either a machine washable, stretchy suede or faux leather for box and T-shaped cushions, as well as a 100% cotton number for the traditionalists on Wayfair in a smaller size (the larger is currently out of stock).

The same goes for Sixpenny. If you own one of the brand’s Neva, Gabriel, Aria, Devyn, Amelia, Elias, Esme, Ziki, Loula, or Olea sofas, you can purchase a separate cover. All are removable, cleanable, and swappable, so you can switch out color schemes (there are dozens of recycled fabrics and hues to choose from) with the season or your evolving interior style. The caveat: These are pricey, and since each is made to order, it can take 12 to 14 weeks to arrive at your door, although the company does ship for free.

How We Chose These Products

For us, the best couch covers balance comfort, style, and practicality. This is a product designed to protect your sofa from all sorts of daily wear and tear, whether it’s the dreaded wine spill, a puppy with attachment issues, or a child who hasn’t quite yet conquered a proper hand-cleaning technique. We also ensured our list of superior slipcovers included options for those who simply can’t afford a brand-new couch but still want a particular color or fabric—even if it happens to be a hard-to-care-for white—because we made sure all our picks are able to be tossed in the wash come laundry day to look good as new (even if the sofa underneath isn’t). Versatility was key as well, whether the design was able to stretch to multiple sizes as small as a love seat or as large as a sectional or to a range of popular brands such as IKEA and Crate & Barrel. You can stuff these fabrics into each crevice and corner (or opt for additional covers for each individual cushion) for tight, smooth lines or gently drape them over for an unfussy, relaxed look.

Our Shopping Checklist

Size

Most couches are roughly 80 inches wide, but can be as short as 75 inches or as long as 90-plus inches. Some covers are designed to fit specific products from brands like IKEA, Pottery Barn, Muji, and West Elm, but you can find universal covers that work for a variety of sizes (typically small, medium, and large) and styles as well. Our advice is to go with a cover that’s slightly bigger than your furniture to avoid having to grapple with the fabric, tucking anything extra into the corners for a smooth, streamlined look.

Material

If you’re trying to avoid the draped-sheet look of your grandparents’ living room—or fool guests into thinking you’ve ordered a brand-new piece of furniture—stick with fabrics that not only look good but feel high-end. Skip polyester-and-spandex combos and opt instead for luxurious linen, cotton, velvet, or corduroy.

Comfort

Having to constantly readjust a cover can be annoying, so look for options that either come in multiple pieces or are held together by zips, ties, or Velcro to keep them in place.

Ask Domino

Q: How do you cover a couch and make it look good?

According to Christina Nydahl, head of brand at Bemz, it’s all about the wiggle. After removing each cushion (and the original fabric, if you can), adjust the opposite sides simultaneously as you pull the cover over the sofa; in other words, don’t cover one side completely before addressing the fit on the other side. “And make sure the seams are aligned to avoid unwanted creases,” advises Nydahl. But for a fit that looks upholstered, it’s best to order a custom-made cover.

Q: How often does a sofa slipcover need to be washed?

At least once a month is ideal, though Le suggests tackling the chore more often. “My favorite thing is to sit on it when it’s fresh, just like hopping into bed with crisp sheets,” notes Nydahl. “The cover is usually washed on a cold cycle, and it’s recommended not to tumble dry. But we’re rebels and do it anyway. It comes out perfect every time.” For routine upkeep, it’s best to fluff up your cushions on the daily and vacuum crumbs regularly.

Q: Instead of buying a couch cover, can I just use a sheet?

One hundred percent. Another one of our favorite budget-friendly hacks to switch up the look and feel of a cheap sofa (especially if it’s starting to look a little rough around the edges) is slipping on a fitted sheet. As you may have noted from our guide to the best under-$500 sofas, our favorites include King Linen’s stone-washed sheet, gingham a la Piglet in Bed, and a clover-covered cotton number on Amazon, linked below.

The Last Word

Couch covers are no longer an unappealing solution for hand-me-down sofas—now they come in luxe fabrics and custom sizes and look just as inviting as the seat underneath. For the best of every world (custom sizing, tons of fabrics and colors), we love Comfortworks’s covers and its linen line in particular.
