About a decade ago, when I asked an interior designer what the best sectional sofa was, she warned me about ones that curve: “They only work in the space you have today—once you move, you’re out of luck.” So for years I took her advice and shied away from couches with corners, too scared they’d dominate my current space and mess up the future floor plan of a down-the-road apartment—one I hadn’t even starting looking for yet. What I didn’t know then is that choosing the best sectional sofa is really about picking a sectional by size.

Now I’m older and wiser, and I know that sectionals come in all shapes and sizes—and finding one for any kind of room is a total reality, no matter how much space (or cash) you have. So, please, learn from my mistake and treat yourself to a couch you’re comfortable with These are the best sectional sofas for any size home.

Small Sectionals

Photography by Aaron Bengochea

Just because you live in a studio doesn’t mean you can’t have a sofa that takes a turn. (This couple does!) Each of these options measures up to 6 feet or less, meaning there’s plenty of space to cuddle up without feeling like your sectional is the only piece of furniture in the room.

Medium Sectionals

Photography by Brittany Ambridge

A one-bedroom apartment or midsize living room provides plenty of space to stretch your legs—each of these offerings is less than 8 feet long—and show off some personality with fabric and pattern. For example, a lilac velvet sectional gives off a luxe vibe (even if it only costs $1,100), while a dark squishy version would go great in your gaming den.

Large Sectionals

Families and singles alike will appreciate the roominess of a nearly 10-foot sectional. But with great scale comes great (design) responsibility: The bigger the sofa, the more visual and physical real estate it will take up. A neutral color works best as a base—then pack it with pillows to show off some personality.

Extra-Large Sectionals

Okay, okay, I know what I just said about keeping it neutral—but in the case of an almost-12-foot sectional, bigger and bolder is better. For example, a salmon-colored option sets the tone for the entire room—and has enough seating that no one will have to crane their neck during movie night. Similarly, a blue velvet is the perfect welcome after (or during?) a long day of Zoom calls. Or if a white sofa doesn’t bring you instant calm, then this one’s impressively low price tag ($1,230!) just might.

We get it, sofas are expensive—but not without good reason. This piece of furniture is the central hub of the living room, and these days it’s more than just a go-to gathering spot for movie nights. (Yours might also be the preferred place to take work calls and meetings, in addition to the occasional midday nap, or perhaps a makeshift guest room with a secret mattress hidden inside.) So calling it a worthy investment is an understatement. But if full price is too big of a pill for you to swallow—and hunting for the best sofa under $500 sounds like more trouble than it’s worth—we scrounged up every deal we could find happening right now.

Below is our running list of the best sofa deals from editor-favorite furniture brands. We’re clocking the most noteworthy savings, from seasonal sitewide sales to one-off promos, and plan to update as we spot more.

One reviewer describes it as “simple and versatile for a limited space.” Another adds, “I was looking for a sofa that fit my small living room and needed the right dimensions. As enthusiasts of the modular furniture brand, we’re totally locked into Floyd’s sale calendar—the Detroit-based retailer often hosts sitewide sales during which sofas and sectionals are discounted a little more. Unsurprisingly, our latest check-in revealed deals on its best-selling sofas, love seats, and chaise styles; they’re once again 30% off. We’d go for the quasi-customizable Sink Down. Much like the Form, this latest iteration offers a slew of stain-resistant performance fabrics that make it kid- and pet-friendly. It’s also one of the best deep-seat sofas out there.

Modular Bondi 6-Seater Sofa in Eggshell
Modular Bondi 6-Seater Sofa in Eggshell, Inside Weather ($6,173 was $8,673)

No code is required to take advantage of Inside Weather’s Presidents’ Day sale. Another the-more-you-spend, the-more-you-save–type sale, we’d recommend scooping up the modular Bondi. Its tapered recline is cradled by a wood frame, and the cushions can be wrapped up with a lifeproof fabric that’s stain resistant, liquid repellent, and machine washable. Did we mention it’s petproof? One reviewer writes, “A simple Google search for some catproof furniture led me to Inside Weather, and, boy, did I hit the jackpot. I love both the comfort and the looks, and my kitties love the comfort but aren’t interested in using it as a scratching piece.”

Amala 90-Inch Upholstered Sofa, Joss & Main ($1,472 was $1,840)

Joss & Main has included a whole assortment of discounted sofas, sectionals, and settees in its Presidents’ Day Sale. Case in point: This highly rated Amala upholstered number is an extra 20% off with the code TAKE20. Looks way more expensive than the actual cost,” one shopper writes.

Shop

Through February 19, McGee & Co. will be offering up to 25% off its sought-after homewares, from case goods to tabletop. The sofa selection includes just one score, but it’s a good one: the Alford settee. Upholstered in cream tones, the soft, curved lines offset its chunky silhouette. Set it up adjacent to a sofa in living spaces or park one it a spacious entryway.

15% Off Sitewide at Neighbor

Loveseat-Neighbor
Terra Loveseat, Neighbor ($2,202 was $2,590)
Shop

We’re big fans of Neighbor’s sustainable outdoor furniture and accessories, from its aluminum collection to its newly-debuted floor-portable table lamp combo. Use the code PRES2024 through February 27 to take 15% off everything.

Up to 20% Off Sofas and Sectionals at Pottery Barn

pb big sur sofa
105-Inch Big Sur Square Arm Upholstered Sofa, Pottery Barn ($3,239 was $3,599)
Shop

Pottery Barn’s catalog is packed with sofas and sectionals, and a quick scan of its up to 20% off sale in the category reveals several excellent options. We like the Big Sur, a casual and endlessly customizable sofa that comes in smart colors like terracotta (one of the on-sale fabrics). With generous proportions, this one’s made for lounging.

43% Off Balboa Sofa at Serena & Lily

Furn_Balboa_Sofa_Perennials
Balboa Sofa, Serena & Lily ($2,000 was $3,498)
Shop

Serena & Lily’s Presidents’ Day Sale seems to be focused on dining, but there’s one very chic sofa on sale right now: the Balboa. It’s 43% off, which means the price is marked down by $1,500. The Balboa’s frame is handcrafted of solid beech and hand-wrapped in rattan, and the interior frame, seat, and back cushions are upholstered in hardy Perennials performance fabric.

20% Off Orders $1,000+ at Sixpenny

Sixpenny Gabriel Sofa
Gabriel Sectional, Sixpenny ($3,679 was $4,599)
Shop

The rare sale at Sixpenny should be acknowledged as a holiday. (Its luxe sofas are editor-tested and -approved.) February 17–22, take 20% off orders of $1,000 or more with the code HUMMINGBIRD.

20% Off Target Threshold x Studio McGee Woodland Hills Sofa

target mcgee sofa
Threshold x Studio McGee Woodland Hills Sofa, Target ($640 was $800)
Shop

There aren’t many Target brand sofas included in the retailer’s 30% off sale, but this one caught our eye, by Domino favorite Studio McGee. The width is a slim 72.5 inches, which makes it perfect for smaller spaces, and the gray upholstery paired with an all-wood frame keeps things warm and cozy. Plus it’s hard to find quality sofas under $1,000, and at this price? Would take hours of searching.

Extra 40% Off Sale Items at Urban Outfitters

UO sofa
Aria Upholstered Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($540 was $1,299)
Shop

Through February 19, Urban Outfitters’s sale section is an extra 40% off and stocked with more than 600 items. In addition to a couple of highly rated sofas, some products from the best-selling Mason collection are included. The additional discount applies in cart, by the way. And our piece of advice for UO: Always read the reviews and consider any final sale notes.

Up to 60% Off Select Sofas and Sectionals at West Elm

west elm hampton sofa small
Hampton Modular Small 3-Piece Ottoman Sectional, West Elm ($2,718 was $3,397)
Shop

Hundreds of items at West Elm have been sporting discounts as high as 60% off this month, but we’ve got our eye on the 20% off small space–friendly Hampton sofa in white linen. (If you’re looking beyond seating, we put together a list of our favorite finds for easy shopping.) Plus get an extra 15% off clearance with the code EXTRA15.

My Search for the Perfect Sofa Took a Year—Here’s the Winner (and the Runners-up) https://www.domino.com/style-shopping/best-brown-sectional/ Wed, 11 Oct 2023 05:10:00 +0000 https://www.domino.com/?p=313392

Brown upholstery quickly became a must-have.

My living room refresh felt destined from the start. When I moved into my Brooklyn apartment in March 2019, I was determined to have a conversation sofa setup, where two couches face each other. After five years of living in Manhattan, I finally had enough room for more than a love seat. The only problem was, I couldn’t find a suitable second sofa to face the one I already had, a reliable and super-comfortable gray three-seater from Article. So for two years, I settled on a mint-colored Chiclet reproduction from Industry West that worked in the space but wasn’t 100 percent perfect.

I was grateful for my safe, sunny living room during the pandemic, but after sitting in the same space with the same view surrounded by the same almost perfect furniture arrangement, I made the choice to switch it up. I wanted friends to be able to pile onto one ginormous sectional, and was also ready for a more cohesive color palette to complement two living room design decisions I very much do not regret: a multicolored mural painted by a friend and my custom coffee table.

The decision to rework the space was an easy one, but actually picking a new sofa? Certainly not. It took me one full calendar year to decide. I was working at a major furniture retailer at the time and have always believed in the paradox of choice when it came to decorating my own home, that being exposed to limitless possibilities (in this case, sofas) meant it was harder, not easier, to choose. Keep reading to get familiar with the top contenders, why they ended up on the reject list and not in my apartment, and how I feel about the winner today.

West Elm Harmony Sectional

Shop

Build Your Own Harmony Sectional, West Elm ($680 – $2,399)

I went back and forth on a few West Elm styles, some more modern, others more plush. This one ended up being my preferred shape, even though I had previously sworn off sectionals. I used the early months to narrow down essentials like size, a new layout, and color palette. West Elm was a great place to start because it has so many silhouettes and upholstery options. It soon became clear that I was gravitating toward a more mature, neutral palette and decided to pursue a search solely for brown sectionals, considering jute, camel, and yellow rugs. My West Elm pick was put on the back burner as I began to further scour the Internet.

Rejected for: Casual silhouette and large size.

CB2 Perimeter Sofa in Luca Espresso

Sofas photo
Shop

Perimeter Sofa in Luca Espresso, CB2 ($2,299)

I’ve always been a fan of CB2’s trendier shapes. I didn’t want any sofa, I wanted a unique sofa. But where CB2 gained points for shape, it fell short in fabric options. The only brown upholstery available was velvet, which felt a touch glam for the vibe I was looking to achieve. The exact sectional I was considering wasn’t available anymore, but I also fell deeply in love with its Perimeter sofa, enough to consider ditching my sectional plans (a big deal). If I was conducting my search today, I definitely would have considered the Chale 4-piece sectional and Terrain 5-piece sectional, too.

Rejected for: Lack of upholstery options.

Interior Define Lukas 3-Seat Bumper Sectional

brown sofa
Shop

Lukas 3-Seat Bumper Sectional, Interior Define ($2,836)

I have an Interior Define pull-out sofa in my guest bedroom that I adore. It was ordered and delivered in the thick of the pandemic with friendly and frequent emails updating me on the status of the custom-made sofa, which created deep brand trust. The brand had just opened a store in my neighborhood, so of course I went to scout the options. And though most of my stipulations mentioned here include color and style, the most important factor when buying a sofa to me is how comfortable it is. I love to sit cross-legged and generally prefer to be horizontal while relaxing at home. This Interior Define design checked all my boxes, visually and physically. I was even willing to overlook the velvet upholstery! Then…after I got multiple quotes from my design expert at the company and had even typed my credit card information into the checkout page, I pulled the plug, not wanting to wait the 25-week delivery ETA. Just weeks later, it became clear customers were struggling to have their orders fulfilled, so I was extra-relieved I didn’t hit “buy.”

Rejected for: Wait time.

Secondhand From Kaiyo

Sofas photo
Shop

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Haywood Chaise and a Half Sectional, Kaiyo (now $2,447)

It was at around the nine-month mark that I started to feel desperate. I love vintage but tend to buy storage pieces and various accessories, not sofas that require a full upholstery job and multiple delivery orchestrations. The thought of making another decision on fabric already felt like too much, but I indulged myself in an evening scroll on Kaiyo anyway. What I found was a wide selection of very cool silhouettes that made me question why anyone buys anything new. Ultimately, I knew I didn’t have the bandwidth to take on an upholstery project, so it was onto the next!

Rejected for: Too much DIY required.

The Winner: Hem Palo Sectional

modern sofa
Shop

Palo Corner Sofa Left in Brown-Black, Hem ($5,349)

To recap, I wanted a sofa that could help make my living room feel more grounded and grown-up, which included a modern, low profile and brown upholstery that was also low-maintenance. It had to be deep and comfortable, and I didn’t want to wait 1 million years for it to arrive. I don’t remember how I finally found the Palo sectional by Hem, but I do remember immediately making an appointment to stop by the brand’s showroom in SoHo to see and sit.

The fabric was different than any I had encountered—a mix of 70 percent virgin wool and 30 percent viscose that wasn’t supersoft to the touch but durable and the exact color I had been imagining in my head. I fell hard for the exposed bar detail and modular design. It was firmer than any of the other contenders, but the shape was incredible, and it was the ideal length. The price was in the right range, and it even had a design element not on my list: an open chaise on the right side that made the expanded footprint of my living room feel more open. I purchased it 48 hours later, and it was assembled in my living room in less than a month. I paired it with a solid Nordic Knots Grand rug in chestnut, a decision made in the span of a few hours.

Photography by Alyssa Clough | The Hem Palo sectional in my apartment.

Would I recommend spending a whole year deciding on a piece of furniture? Absolutely not. Do I appreciate my new living room every single day? Yes. Did I question everything when Sarah Ellison dropped her chocolate Float sectional days before mine was delivered? Obviously, yes. But in a world of fast furniture and instantaneous deliveries, I’m glad that I gave myself the time and space to invest in the right piece of furniture that I intend to keep for years to come.

Scroll through our top picks to find the best couch covers for you—they’re sure to give your furniture a new lease on life after just one trip to the laundry room.

Our Favorites

Best Overall: Comfortworks Pure Linen Sofa Cover

linen couch cover
Karlstad 2 Seater Sofa Cover in Linen, Comfortworks ($309)
Shop

Material: 100% linen | Universal: No | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: Based on brands such as IKEA, Pottery Barn, and Crate & Barrel

What we like:

  • Sizes available for 34 different brands
  • Each cover is labeled with a tag indicating the corresponding cushion or armrest
  • Easily washes and returns to original color

Worth noting:

  • For brands not listed, you’ll need to pay extra for a custom cover

Why we chose it: Made from 100% linen, these custom couch covers are durable, washable, and stay put without sliding.

With Comfortworks’s Pure Linen line, DIYer Sara Le finally has the white sofa of her dreams. More than a year after purchasing her slipcover, she confirms it has held up beautifully in her active household. “I have two kids who eat and play on our sofa every day; I can’t get them off it,” she notes. “Spills and stains most definitely happen—I’m talking orange juice, blueberries, Cheetos fingers—but I don’t stress about it because I know the cover is washable and so durable. It always comes out bright white all over again!” Her favorite part, though, may be the invisible zippers that prevent sliding.

Best Value: Easy-Going Stretch Sofa Slipcover

gray sofa cover
Easy-Going Stretch Sofa Slipcover, Amazon ($30)
Shop

Material: Polyester-and-spandex blend | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: 4-seater sofa, chair, love seat, oversize chair, oversize love seat, oversize sofa, sofa

What we like:

  • Superstretchy
  • Less than $30 for a full sofa size
  • Ships with anti-slip foam to prevent slipping

Worth noting:

  • Only 1 universal piece (measure carefully!)

Why we chose it: How can you argue with 80,000-plus positive reviews?

Shoppers can’t seem to say enough good things about this affordable cover. No matter how oddly shaped (such as one reviewer’s IKEA Kivik L-shaped sofa) a couch is or if it reclines, this product refuses to slip or move out of place despite being one piece. One of the biggest issues with slipcovers is the fact that users are always readjusting to keep the formfitting look, but this product apparently refuses to budge. Plus as one of 87,000-plus happy customer notes, it “doesn’t look or feel cheap,” despite the low price point. Other benefits listed by owners include its resistance to pet fur and stains, earning it 4.3 stars on Amazon and the number-one bestseller spot in love seat slipcovers.

Best Tie-Front: Farmhouse Basketweave Sofa Slipcover

Tie front faux linen slip cover
Shop

Material: Polyester | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Loose | Sizes: 74 to 96 inches

What we like:

  • Simple construction is easy to set up
  • Ties on the front add charming detail
  • Thick fabric hides most patterns or stains

Worth noting:

  • Reviewers say it wrinkles easily
  • Polyester fabric is less breathable than linen

Why we chose it: For a more traditional slipcover look (read: cottage vibes), this cover is thick enough to hide any pattern underneath.

This faux linen couch cover from Target is thick enough to hide even the wildest colors and patterns, and its classic ties work just as well in a new traditionalist’s space with English cottage vibes as a modernist room that’s dominated by clean lines. The only drawback? Made with polyester, the basket-weave slipcover isn’t quite as breathable as linen, but it’s still worth every penny. A few runners-up in this category we think are worth mentioning: the IKEA Uppland cover and this Khaki Stripe

Best Texture: Kekou Stretch Sofa Cover

Beige Couch Cover
Kekou Stretch Sofa Cover, Amazon ($40)
Shop

Material: Polyester blend | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: Extra-large, large, medium, small

What we like:

  • Quality stitching
  • Soft, textured fabric resists pet fur and dirt
  • Anti-slip foam rods included for a tight, slip-free fit

Worth noting:

  • Colors may vary from online images

Why we chose it: An elastic, wrinkle-resistant couch cover that stretches to fit most sizes.

This magic sofa cover is a bargain for anyone who doesn’t want to bother with multiple pieces of fabric (and is also another budget-friendly Amazon buy). Sold as one elastic-edged piece, each stretches to fit a variety of shapes—the jacquardlike fabric is available in 20 colors, and sizes range from small to extra-extra-large—and comes with a foam rod that can be placed between cushions for a smoother look. We love that it isn’t your typical faux suede; one reviewer notes it is “quality made and has quality stitching,” and others have said it has yet to show signs of wear, resisting pills and tears.

Best Stripes: Breakwater Bay Stripe Box Cushion Slipcover

black and white striped couch cover
Breakwater Bay Stripe Box Cushion Slipcover, Wayfair ($65 was $80)
Shop

Material: Cotton | Universal: Box cushion | Fitted or loose: Loose | Sizes: 72 to 96 inches

What we like:

  • Made with 100% cotton
  • Nautical stripe in 7 beachy colors
  • Machine washable and pet friendly

Worth noting:

  • 1 piece, so you may have to do some tucking

Why we chose it: A tie-front slipcover with a little seaside pizzazz.

With the correct box-cushion sofa, this Cabana-inspired cover is just the ticket if you’re looking to add a chic pattern to your sofa without having to commit to a particular style or color. But as much as we love the stripes—you have your choice of seven ecru and color combos to choose from, including the classic black or navy blue—we love the fact that this cover is as breezy to take care of as it looks. “Easy to put on, take off, and wash. Helped me change the entire look of a room for a fraction of a new sofa!” one shopper writes. Another adds it was tapped for a room where kids and pets alike frequent often specifically. “Resisted stains (no just spills yet, but so far so good for all else) and scratches.” Bonus: It’s 19% off right now at Wayfair for just $65.

Best Loose Fit: Magic Linen Couch Cover

Rust Linen Couch Cover Draped Over Sofa with Pillow
MagicLinen Linen Sofa Cover, Etsy ($78 was $98)
Shop

Material: Linen | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Loose | Sizes: 12 options

What we like:

  • Stonewashed linen fabric
  • Sturdy stitching
  • Available in a range of colors
  • Oeko-Tex certified

Worth noting:

  • Tends to wrinkle
  • Will require repositioning from time to time

Why we chose it: If you’re looking for a no-fuss cover you can just toss over the couch, this is it.

For the furniture equivalent of a Netflix-and-chill session, drape your sofa in this Etsy favorite, which blends sturdy fabric and quality stitching. Available in a range of saturated colors, from olive to mustard, the boho-chic linen coverlet is large enough to fit over both your king bedspread and sofa, yet it’s a more durable option than just tossing on a throw for the same effect.

The cover will need repositioning from time to time (since it’s not tied or zipped on), and beware that linen does have a tendency to wrinkle, but lots of people embrace this aesthetic, as that’s the natural beauty of the fabric. And don’t just take our word for it: This storefront is backed by an Oeko-Tex certification and has completed more than 1,000 positive sales.

Best for L-Shaped Sectionals: Ebern Designs L-Shaped Sofa Slipcover

Material: Polyester-spandex blend | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: 1 size fits all

What we like:

  • Pet-friendly
  • 2 pieces to cover the main sofa and chaise
  • Strapless elastic corners

Worth noting:

  •  No individual cushion covers

Why we chose it: A straightforward, hassle-free cover that’ll universally stretch across all sorts of chaises.

This well-reviewed cover for L-shaped sectionals comes in 17 colors in a textured polyester-spandex blend that repels pet fur. It’s also stain resistant, machine washable, and affordably priced (in fact, it’s often discounted and currently 25% off). Its prowess lies in simplicity, with just two pieces designed to fully stretch over any style.

One reviewer comments, “Great fit, nice stretch, keeps everything tight. Easy to install; even after sitting and getting up off the couch, there is no wrinkle issue, especially if you correctly apply the foam rolls—the cover will not pop out after you tuck it in the couch! Love it; will be ordering more colors!” Another writes, “It’s perfect! It fits our couch and is exactly as described. Much, much better than the thousands of blankets we had to cover it with to protect it from our crazy puppies.”

Best for IKEA: Bemz IKEA Sofa Cover

Material: Linen, corduroy, wool-look, velvet, recycled material | Universal: No | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: 30-plus IKEA models

What we like:

  • Compatible with 30-plus IKEA models
  • Wide range of color options
  • Lots of material options

Worth noting:

  • Will take about a month to arrive

Why we chose it: These covers completely transform an IKEA sofa into a luxurious, custom-looking piece.

Don’t part ways with your starter sofa just yet. Bemz slipcovers are compatible with 30-plus IKEA models and come in a loose and regular fit, as well as a range of fabrics (cotton, linen, velvet, and more) in nearly every color you can think of. Made in Europe to maintain quality and minimize waste, they’re even available in a 100% recycled line. That said, they are custom-sewn to order, so expect to wait approximately three to four weeks for the cover to arrive. And the company recently launched new fabrics in bouclé stripes, linen gingham, and cotton hemp just in time to offer both visual texture and a warm, cozy feel to get through winter.

Best for Pets: Molly Mutt Couch Cover

I’m a Realist Couch Cover, Molly Mutt
Shop

Material: Cotton canvas | Universal: Yes | Fitted or loose: Fitted | Sizes: 2-seater, 3-seater, 3-seater XL

What we like:

  • Nonskid backing and discreet anchors
  • Quilted canvas easily brushes clean
  • Machine washable

Worth noting:

  • Less aesthetically pleasing than our other picks

Why we chose it: Couches and dogs are…not the best combo, but this machine washable cover keeps fabric clean and pets cozied up next to you.

Here’s a quick solution for furry companions that love to sprawl out on the sofa as much as you do. A nonskid backing combines with discreet anchors to keep this cover in place no matter how restless your pooch is. But the biggest draw has to be the no-fuss, quilted cotton canvas material, which brushes clean with little effort and can be washed just as easily. It’s not as luxe as Belgian linen or soft velvet, but with destructive pets around, this cover will certainly protect your investment couch underneath. Reviewers also rave about the brand’s outstanding customer service, as well as the quality construction.

A pet-friendly runner-up: Pottery Barn’s pet throw. It’s available in three sizes (30-by-30, 30-by-52, and 52-by-100) and the same performance fabrics that cover the brand’s sofa. It offers a seamless extra layer of protection, particularly if you go with a matching material if your sofa happens to be from the mass home store, too.

We Also Like

Sure Fit

This brand is on our radar—we haven’t had any personal experience with it yet—and we’re intrigued by its promise to provide a custom upholstered look for $300 or less. The slipcovers come in either a machine washable, stretchy suede or faux leather for box and T-shaped cushions, as well as a 100% cotton number for the traditionalists on Wayfair in a smaller size (the larger is currently out of stock).

The same goes for Sixpenny. If you own one of the brand’s Neva, Gabriel, Aria, Devyn, Amelia, Elias, Esme, Ziki, Loula, or Olea sofas, you can purchase a separate cover. All are removable, cleanable, and swappable, so you can switch out color schemes (there are dozens of recycled fabrics and hues to choose from) with the season or your evolving interior style. The caveat: These are pricey, and since each is made to order, it can take 12 to 14 weeks to arrive at your door, although the company does ship for free.

Easy-Going

Quilted Couch Cover
Reversible Sofa Slipcover, Easy-Going ($45)
Shop

This water-resistant cover is made by the same brand as our favorite budget-friendly one. It’s an ideal option for those who want to protect a couch from unexpected wear while renting their space on Airbnb or Vrbo.

How We Chose These Products

For us, the best couch covers balance comfort, style, and practicality. This is a product designed to protect your sofa from all sorts of daily wear and tear, whether it’s the dreaded wine spill, a puppy with attachment issues, or a child who hasn’t quite yet conquered a proper hand-cleaning technique. We also ensured our list of superior slipcovers included options for those who simply can’t afford a brand-new couch but still want a particular color or fabric—even if it happens to be a hard-to-care-for white—because we made sure all our picks are able to be tossed in the wash come laundry day to look good as new (even if the sofa underneath isn’t). Versatility was key as well, whether the design was able to stretch to multiple sizes as small as a love seat or as large as a sectional or to a range of popular brands such as IKEA and Crate & Barrel. You can stuff these fabrics into each crevice and corner (or opt for additional covers for each individual cushion) for tight, smooth lines or gently drape them over for an unfussy, relaxed look.

Our Shopping Checklist

Size

Most couches are roughly 80 inches wide, but can be as short as 75 inches or as long as 90-plus inches. Some covers are designed to fit specific products from brands like IKEA, Pottery Barn, Muji, and West Elm, but you can find universal covers that work for a variety of sizes (typically small, medium, and large) and styles as well. Our advice is to go with a cover that’s slightly bigger than your furniture to avoid having to grapple with the fabric, tucking anything extra into the corners for a smooth, streamlined look.

Material

If you’re trying to avoid the draped-sheet look of your grandparents’ living room—or fool guests into thinking you’ve ordered a brand-new piece of furniture—stick with fabrics that not only look good but feel high-end. Skip polyester-and-spandex combos and opt instead for luxurious linen, cotton, velvet, or corduroy.

Comfort

Having to constantly readjust a cover can be annoying, so look for options that either come in multiple pieces or are held together by zips, ties, or Velcro to keep them in place.

Ask Domino

Q: How do you cover a couch and make it look good?

According to Christina Nydahl, head of brand at Bemz, it’s all about the wiggle. After removing each cushion (and the original fabric, if you can), adjust the opposite sides simultaneously as you pull the cover over the sofa; in other words, don’t cover one side completely before addressing the fit on the other side. “And make sure the seams are aligned to avoid unwanted creases,” advises Nydahl. But for a fit that looks upholstered, it’s best to order a custom-made cover.

Q: How often does a sofa slipcover need to be washed?

At least once a month is ideal, though Le suggests tackling the chore more often. “My favorite thing is to sit on it when it’s fresh, just like hopping into bed with crisp sheets,” notes Nydahl. “The cover is usually washed on a cold cycle, and it’s recommended not to tumble dry. But we’re rebels and do it anyway. It comes out perfect every time.” For routine upkeep, it’s best to fluff up your cushions on the daily and vacuum crumbs regularly.

Q: Instead of buying a couch cover, can I just use a sheet?

One hundred percent. Another one of our favorite budget-friendly hacks to switch up the look and feel of a cheap sofa (especially if it’s starting to look a little rough around the edges) is slipping on a fitted sheet. As you may have noted from our guide to the best under-$500 sofas, our favorites include King Linen’s stone-washed sheet, gingham a la Piglet in Bed, and a clover-covered cotton number on Amazon, linked below.

The Last Word

Couch covers are no longer an unappealing solution for hand-me-down sofas—now they come in luxe fabrics and custom sizes and look just as inviting as the seat underneath. For the best of every world (custom sizing, tons of fabrics and colors), we love Comfortworks’s covers and its linen line in particular.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

A deep-seat sofa. We’re guessing you’d know one if you saw one but may not be able to pinpoint what exactly differentiates this dramatic silhouette from your standard couch. For starters, they look as cozy as a bed and prioritize comfort, especially if your seating arrangement is more about lazing than entertaining. If you’re the kind of person whose idea of the best weekend plans is gathering snacks and a throw blanket to watch as many of the latest A24 films in one sitting as possible, then you likely want to get more familiar with this particular style. Here’s everything you need to know about deep-seat sofas.

Just how deep are the cushions of a deep-seat sofa, anyway?

According to Apt2B, the average sofa seat depth is anywhere between 21 and 25 inches—so you could argue that options beyond that range are considered deep. But most of our favorites actually hover around a whopping 40 inches. Basically, when you pop a squat, your sofa should feel like it’s swallowing you—we mean that in the best way. The type of fill also has a heavy influence on just how soft that sink-in-the-couch feeling is; feathers, for instance, offer cloudlike comfort, whereas high-density foam is superior when it comes to structure and support.

Depth, by the way, can be measured from the back of a cushion to the front. The roominess is what makes this style of sofa so comfortable; there’s plenty of space to spread out and no need for legs to be dangling off the side.

Who are deep-seat sofas good for?

This couch is for naps, Netflix binges, and making sure everyone in the family has a spot to call their own; no need for extra floor cushions. If you still want to be able to perch yourself or host a lot of happy hours, we recommend looking for a sofa with well-structured arms and a taller back or one filled with firm foam.

For our shopping director, Liz Buxton, a deep-seat sofa was a no-brainer for the den of her home in New York’s Hudson Valley. In her words, it’s a proper TV room. The other swaying factor? Her husband, Tim, is tall—we’re talking over 6 feet—so it’s guaranteed to feel perfectly loungy for everyone, no matter if you’re going with a love seat, L-shaped sectional, or seven-piece pit.

How much do deep-seat sofas typically cost?

Since these couches are, for lack of a better term, big, they cost more than your standard sofa. Constructing one requires more of everything—upholstery fabric, fill, frame. And if the materials are higher quality, that only bumps up the price tag even more. It also means that you may have to pay extra to have one delivered. Our favorites, listed below, range in cost from $1,000 to $8,000, but we’ve seen others from luxury brands going for upwards of $9,000.

Anything else I should know before buying a deep-seat sofa?

Whenever possible, we always recommend popping into a showroom or store to see whether you like the feel of a sofa you’re considering. Otherwise, opt for a brand that allows you to live with your furniture for at least 30 days before having to decide whether it’s a keeper or not. And before checking out, make sure you have the room for one—even if it ships in pieces, you’ll want to ensure these oversize loungers will squeeze through your doorways and not interrupt the flow of your space with the rest of your furniture, whether that be coffee tables, side tables, or accent chairs. A deeper couch also means more of your rug may be covered, so keep that in mind, too.

Our Favorite Deep-Seat Sofas

If all of the above sounds good to you, get ready to dive into one of our nine favorites.

West Elm Harmony Sofa

deep seat velvet sofa from west elm with wood legs
Harmony Sofa, West Elm ($2,199)
Shop

West Elm’s best-selling Harmony sofa offers two deep-seat-depth choices: 41 inches and 47 inches. Surrounded by pillowy-soft cushions (one of the softest that the brand offers overall) on the back and arms, this couch’s design doubles down on comfort, especially if you choose one of the velvet performance fabrics. It’s also one of our top choices for sectionals

Article Leigh Corner Sectional

How often do you come across a corner sofa that isn’t a total eyesore? Or one that won’t set you back a fortune? New to Article, the Leigh sectional pairs roomy cushions spacious enough for the whole family to sprawl out on and angled arms to prop yourself up in case you don’t want to doze off at first sit. Comfort and good looks aside, this option also happens to be super-durable. Covered in Olefin, a popular outdoor-friendly fabric, the couch is made for a household that has kids or pets.

Amazon Stone & Beam Westview Extra-Deep Down-Filled Couch

cream deep seat couch
Stone & Beam Westview Extra Deep Couch, Amazon ($984 was $1,094)
Shop

As we mentioned, deep-seat couches don’t come cheap, but that doesn’t mean all are incredibly costly. The Westview via Amazon’s in-house brand Stone & Beam is currently 10% off, knocking the original price down to under $1,000. Its feather-filled cushions boast a 42-inch depth. And while they are covered in polyester, one reviewer writes, “This is one of the comfiest couches I have had, and the material is really soft and seems durable. My cats have tried scratching at it but have not made any marks.” The solid wood base doesn’t hurt either.

Maiden Home The Sullivan Sofa

the sullivan sofa
The Sullivan, Maiden Home ($2,475)
Shop

Maiden Home is known for offering super-luxurious, supersoft sofas, including one of our favorite slipcovered sofas and sectionals, but the brand also has a few deep-seat offerings. The Sullivan, for example, boasts a 40-inch depth to its sloped arm style and pillowy back for a greater lean that feels both laid-back and casual but elegant. It’s also incredibly durable. Multiple reviewers with children and pets alike claim theirs has withstood three-plus years of wear and tear; and even if your performance fabric starts to look a little tired, you can always have the covers replaced. As one reviewer summarizes, “I purchased the Sullivan sectional approximately two years ago and can only say that the sofa is exceptionally amazing. It is our only comfortable seating area. After receiving many color and texture samples, I decided on the performance fabric in a very light linen color, and it has lived up to its name. It cleans up so easily. Wine, chocolate, daily living—it all cleans up with water and blotting. Truly unbelievable! The sofa sectional still looks clean and new. It has endured dogs, adults, and children sleeping and snacking on it.”

Crate & Barrel Oceanside Wide-Arm Deep-Seat Apartment Sofa

Oceanside Wide Arm Deep Seat Apartment Sofa

Shop

If you live in an apartment that leans on the smaller side, that doesn’t mean a deep-seat sofa is totally out of the question. Opt for the 78-inch-wide version of this low-profile couch if room is tough to come by. Plenty of reviewers have successfully squeezed it into their rentals, and most describe it as deep, though the cushion itself is 27 inches. Still, the overall silhouette sits like a deep-seat sofa, complete with wide arms (you can also go for the armless frame) and a puffy back.

Lulu and Georgia Parque Slipcovered Sofa

linen slipcovered sofa
Parque Slipcover Sofa, Lulu and Georgia ($4,298)
Shop

While it’s one of a few spacious, slipcovered options at Lulu and Georgia, the Parque boasts the greatest seat depth of 35 inches. It’s one large, box cushion construction that combines linen-blend upholstery and a down-blend fill; add on the loose back cushions and it easily masquerades as a daybed. If you want to dial into a relaxed, laid-back seating arrangement, look no further than the Parque. An added bonus: This one ships in two to three weeks, and you can add on white-glove delivery for an extra fee.

ABC Carpet & Home Delancey Sectional

Delancey Sectional
Cobble Hill Delancey Sectional, ABC Carpet & Home ($6,445)
Shop

The overall depth of this massive 132-inch sofa is a mind-boggling 82 inches, making it the runner-up roomiest of the batch. While the handcrafted wood frame can be upholstered in a durable performance fabric, the company notes that this is a professional-clean-only situation, so we’d likely keep it clear of households with kids and pets.

Coburn Six-Piece Pit Sectional

Coburn Six Piece Pit Sectional

You can style the Coburn any way you choose—that’s the allure of going with a modular sofa—but fit it into a pit position and you basically have a bed in your living room. This couch invites you to put your feet up and stay a while, but if you do need to get up, the firm poly-fiber fill and no-sag steel springs mean you can pop in and out of it with ease.

Floyd Sink-Down Sectional

The 34-inch cushions of the Sink Down is Floyd’s biggest seat offering yet—and arguably the most comfortable. Its nearly armless silhouette was literally designed “to make you feel like you’re laying on a cloud,” using a combination of memory foam and blown fiber inserts. For optimal chill, go for the sectional.

Sundays Movie Night 4-Piece Modular Sectional

These superfluffy, feather-filled 36-inch cushions are wrapped up in removable, stain-resistant, linen-blend covers. So even if you go for the all-white colorway, you won’t have to stress too much about movie-night mess. That’s why we’d say this sofa line is aptly named—what else would be better to take in a three-hour feature film? Peep it in our modular sofa guide, too.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

When it comes to even the best sleeper sofas, we must often settle for two out of the three preferred couch characteristics: style, affordability, and comfort. Discerning looks and price points are fairly straightforward, but comfort can be elusive—especially when shopping online. Sleeper sofa mattresses might not immediately come to mind as a targeted search term on your pull-out couch journey, as most options on the market already come equipped with a mattress. But here’s why it should.

Perhaps you invested in a sleeper sofa long ago and love the frame—but the mattress not so much. Maybe you’ve picked up a used option and are, ahem, not interested in sleeping on someone else’s mattress. Or you might have in-laws who visit regularly and your current couch bed unfurls with more than a few lumps. The frequency of use, health issues, and material preference all could factor into your decision to invest in something new. Our research in the somewhat limited space bubbled three strong options to the surface. Below, shop our top picks for the best sleeper sofa mattresses.

Our Favorite Sleeper Sofa Mattresses

Best Overall: Milliard 4.5-Inch Memory Foam Mattress

Milliard 4.5-Inch Memory Foam Mattress
4.5-Inch Memory Foam Full Mattress, Milliard ($199)
Shop

What we like:

  • Vacuum-packed for delivery
  • Soft, zippered cover is removable and washable

Worth noting:

  • Give it 24 hours to fully expand
  • Measuring fit is key

With nearly 4,500 reviews and a 4.5-star rating, the Milliard memory foam mattress is our overall pick for a sleeper sofa replacement. The plush-to-medium firmness is universally pleasing, and it comes in both a full and queen size; plus the 4.5-inch height should be compatible with most sleeper sofa brands.

One reviewer notes they needed “to replace the mattress in our 1980s sofa. This is a great item. It’s very comfortable. We don’t feel the springs through it like we did the old one.” Several others echoed the sentiment, with some even adding that they were skeptical of the short height but were blown away by how cozy it is. Sizing has been the only issue, so make sure to measure the frame apparatus so that it matches that of the mattress.

Best Value: Dynasty Mattress 4-Inch Gel Memory Foam Cooling Mattress

Dynasty Mattress 4-Inch Gel Memory Foam Cooling Mattress
4-Inch Gel Memory Foam Cooling Full Mattress, Dynasty Mattress ($179)

What we like:

  • Cooling
  • 2 inches of gel, 2 inches of memory foam
  • Washable cover

Worth noting:

  • Queen weighs 35 pounds

This medium-firm mattress is a half inch shorter than our overall pick, but it’s also more affordable and adds cooling properties to the mix. The cover is made from silk and polyester, which covers 2 inches of cooling gel and 2 inches of breathable memory foam. It’s also CertiPUR-US certified and works in spots other than a sleeper sofa; think: boats, RVs, and other types of camper setups. Shipping is free and quick—the brand says that the average is three business days for the lower 48. You’ll also get a 30-year limited warranty included on all mattresses.

Reviewers continually remark about the top-notch customer service, and price also comes up. “Great value for the cost,” says one shopper. “Fantastic mattress! Definitely worth the price,” another adds.

Best Splurge: Leggett & Platt AirDream Hypoallergenic Inflatable Mattress

Leggett & Platt AirDream Hypoallergenic Inflatable Mattress
AirDream Hypoallergenic Inflatable Queen Mattress, Leggett & Platt ($505)
Shop

What we like:

  • 11-inch height
  • The electric pump quickly inflates and deflates

Worth noting:

  • Pricey

If you’ve never considered an air mattress for your sleeper sofa, think again. Leggett & Platt’s AirDream is just that—pull it out, plug in the included handheld electric pump, and inflate it over the top coils. Whereas most sleeper sofa mattresses measure to a height of 4 to 5 inches, you get a whopping 11 inches over half an inch of innerspring with the AirDream.

Review after review describes the mattress as “comfortable”, “a quality product,” “amazing,” and “the best mattress you can sleep on with any sleeper sofas.” Some reviewers say if a mattress has arrived and it doesn’t hold air, customer service has been quick to replace it thanks to a three-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. But aren’t a guest’s comments always the make-it-or-break-it when it comes to sleepers? “Everyone raves about how comfortable this mattress is,” a satisfied shopper writes.

Our Favorite Sleeper Sofa Mattress Toppers

If you’re not ready to invest in a full-on makeover for your sofa bed, try a topper or pad instead. Many of these may be able to stay on when the mattress is folded away, but some might require to be added once pulled out. There’s memory foam, down alternative, and even cooling options to choose from here.

Our Shopping Checklist

Mattress Height

The standard height of a sofa mattress is 4.5 inches. If yours clocks in anywhere between 4 and 5 inches, you should be set with 4.5. Go too thin and you might end up feeling the frame beneath you; too high and you’ll risk being able to fold things back into place when not in use. The AirDream is an exception to the rule here—thanks to the use of air that can be deflated, you can have your cake and eat it, too.

Material

In this category, you’re getting either memory foam, innerspring, or, in some cases, air with sleeper sofa mattresses. Our pick for the category is foam; look for layers of different types, like a combination of cooling gel and memory foam, as well as a removable cover you can wash.

Ask Domino

Q: Do sleeper sofas need a special mattress?

While they aren’t special per se, you do need a short mattress where sleeper sofas are concerned. As noted above, look for something that’s between 4.5 and 5 inches and you should be good to go.

Q: What are the best sleeper sofas brands?

Well, that’s subjective, but we have opinions. The most important aspects of a sleeper sofa are the frame, conversion mechanism, and mattress—all wrapped up in a good-looking design. If you’re here, you’re ISO a solution for the third point, but if you want something new altogether, here’s where to start. Our favorite brands right now include Sixpenny, ABC Home, and Article.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

One of the perks of working at Domino is the fact that we look at homes, beautifully individual and dynamic, all day long. And with said perk, we spot commonalities along the way. There are a handful of trademark trends we have grown to expect every season: pastels for spring, vibrant hues for summer, and cozy textures for fall. Then there are those that skew toward the less expected and timeless. Case in point: the best red couches.

A departure from the standard white, beige, or taupe-y seat, this fresh alternative immediately brings a bold dose of color and character to any space. We’ve spotted the primary hue in every shade—from blush and tomato to rust and even rich maroon. And the look is surprisingly more versatile than you may think and can be seamlessly integrated within a wide variety of aesthetics. Below, a closer look at a few of our favorite spaces featuring this particular hue, and how creatives and designers tapped it as the centerpiece of their living quarters or let it blend in with the rest of their decor. Then we share a few shoppable look-alikes (especially if the original was bespoke), to boot.

Armless Red Sofas

In Slash Objects founder Arielle Assouline-Lichten’s Brooklyn studio, this Ligne Roset sofa is an attention-grabbing conversation starter thanks to its bright velvet upholstery. Thankfully it’s also small-space–friendly, making it an appealing pick for apartment dwellers (even if Assouline-Lichten’s lofted space is quite large). The armless, futon-esque frame allows for the creative’s other vintage finds to shine. Our picks, below, also deliver a love seat-like vibe.

Square-Arm Red Sofas

With retro wood paneling as the backdrop, this Reath Design custom sofa covered in a deep red-toned velvet by Kravet makes a straightforward, square-arm design instantly more interesting in Brynn Jones’s home. You can do the same with our favorite sofa brands—Floyd, Lulu and Georgia, West Elm, Pottery Barn, and more all offer a range of reds to dress up their simple frames.

Curved Red Sofas

We’ll never tire of a velvet sofa, especially one that comes in just the right shade of saturated crimson or a softer red-tinted blush. Add to the material a curvy frame that looks and feels like a hug and we’ve pretty much summed up Anthropologie’s Vera sofa, the very one that can be found in Lathan Thomas’s joyful Brooklyn home. As one reviewer so aptly summarizes, “It’s beautiful from every angle.” We tried to channel that feeling into our finds, below.

Statement Red Sofas

Leave it to a former Prada architect to get experimental with living room design. We still think about the custom-made raspberry sofa—with the perfect fringe detail—that Roberto Baciocchi designed himself. The original proves that, sometimes, color is just the start of a standout piece. If you’re seeking a look as unique as Baciocchi’s Tuscany guesthouse, double down on the bold factor by pairing the shade with a funky silhouette, channel-tufting details, or a pattern.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

If you grew up in the early aughts, you likely have vivid memories of hanging out on a cartoon-covered blob. We’re happy to report that the best couches for kids nowadays are no longer limited to those garishly hued numbers. In fact, today’s kid-friendly furniture could easily be mistaken for miniature love seats, and they’re durable, too. While we know of a few designer hacks to make adult-size furniture childproof (hello, FiberSeal), isn’t there something special about providing a designated spot for toddlers and tweens, whether for snacking, reading, or keying up a good old-fashioned puppet show? Besides, while our list of the best couches for kids varies greatly in shape (we’re talking beanbag sofas and modular foam that looks more like building blocks), none should cramp your interior style.

Our Favorites

Best for Playtime: Brentwood Home Play Couch

Sofas photo
Play Couch, Brentwood Home ($315, was $349)
Shop

Material: Recycled polyester and nylon | Dimensions: Varies | Fill: High-density foam

What we like:

  • 30-day risk-free trial
  • Greenguard Gold certified
  • 6 colorful covers that are removable and machine washable
  • Made with vegetable-derived foam and petroleum-free fabrics

Worth noting:

  • On the pricier side

Why we chose it: A modular sofa with configurations limited only by your child’s imagination.

While Jill Singer of Sight Unseen enlisted the help of Keren and Thomas Richter of White Arrow to custom-make child-size foam building blocks (think: oversize rectangles, triangles, and cylinders) to outfit her family’s Hamptons basement, you can enjoy a similar setup right off the shelf with Brentwood Home’s Play Couch. Offering two more pieces than the cult-favorite Nugget, this set of six can come together in the shape of a classic couch, with back cushions and sheltered arms, or be configured into pretty much anything your child puts their mind to, though reviewers most often revere its seemingly endless fort possibilities.

Best for Movie Nights: West Elm Kids Flip Floor Sleeper

Sofas photo
Flip Floor Sleeper, West Elm ($550 and up)
Shop

Material: Varies | Dimensions: 71-by-33-by-21.5 inches | Fill: Polyurethane foam

What we like:

  • Adjustable to lay flat or sit upright
  • Long enough to sit 3

Worth noting:

  • Heavy—60 pounds, to be exact
  • Spot-clean only

Why we chose it: The slouchy silhouette of a beanbaglike floor pillow embodies that notion of cool and comfortable that will transition with your child.

Keep a floor sofa in the kids-only zone (like designer Hollie Velten-Lattrell did) as a crash pad for Disney marathons. While Velten-Lattrell’s original buy from Urban Outfitters is no longer available, this West Elm alternative is a pretty close second. Plan to plop it in front of a TV or projector screen for Saturday-morning cartoons or weekend movie nights (and if buttery popcorn happens to be the snack of choice, you can choose from a swath of performance fabrics, including distressed velvet, tweed, and washed canvas).

Best for a Reading Nook: Crate & Kids Rattan Kids Twin Daybed

Sofas photo
Rattan Kids Twin Daybed, Crate&Barrel ($1,000)
Shop

Material: Rattan | Dimensions: 85-by-42-by-36 inches | Fill: N/A

What we like:

  • Solid wood slats
  • Adjustable iron legs (helpful if you have sloped floors!)
  • Endless design possibilities, just add sheets and pillows

Worth noting:

  • You’ll need to supply the mattress
  • Biggest option on the list

Why we chose it: It’ll fit a twin mattress or two couch cushions, so it’s easy to switch up the color or pattern of whatever sheets or duvet cover you swaddle it with.

Technically this is a daybed, but if you place enough pillows (to do double duty as back- and armrests), it’s worthy of our list of the best couches for kids. Keep a fully stacked library within reach and it’ll become an irresistible spot to snuggle up with their latest Scholastic find. And no harm is done if they doze off (it just so happens to be Heather Taylor’s children’s sleeping spot in their Laurel Canyon home). Plus the sturdy iron-base frame and legs won’t buckle if your child doesn’t exactly happen to have the best track record with the “no jumping on the bed” rule.

Best for Game Rooms: Urban Outfitters Roma Sofa

green and wavy wood sofa
Roma Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($1,299)
Shop

Material: Polyester, rubberwood, and plywood | Dimensions: 74.8-by-33.5-by-30 inches | Fill: Rayon foam

What we like:

  • Trendy, wavy cut frame that feels whimsical and modern
  • Tall leg height (nearly 7 inches) to easily slide and store stacks of board games under

Worth noting:

  • Spot-clean only

Why we chose it: An unexpected design that can hold its own in the same space as a table tennis tournament.

We may have only caught a glimpse of the Roma Sofa hanging out in the ultra-cool game room of a recent Studio DB–designed New Jersey beach house, but we can’t unsee it as a perfect hangout spot. The playful wavy wood frame adds a touch of whimsy, but the full two-seater offers deep, 26-inch cushions roomy enough for siblings, friends, and visitors alike. It’s an unexpected, kid-friendly find, but likely ideal for an older crowd.

Best for Sleepovers: Made Haru Sofa

Sofas photo
Haru Sofa, Made ($383)
Shop

Material: Polyester | Dimensions: 16-by-47-by-20 inches | Fill: Polyethylene

What we like:

  • Mid-century angled wood legs
  • Transitions from love seat to sofa bed
  • The choice between velvet and canvas

Worth noting:

  • Long lead times (ships from the U.K.)
  • Professional cleaning only

Why we chose it: This compact cutie unfolds from lounger to sofa bed in seconds.

This sofa might just be impossible to grow out of, as it’s a small space saver that’ll earn the approval of guests of any age. We first spotted the model in this attic–turned–kids’ room on England’s Kent coast, where it’s an essential part of the seat setup. Its first form is incredibly compact, taking up barely any square footage thanks to a 20-inch depth that’s still long enough to fit two kids, before extending out a full 71 inches, aka longer than a twin. Though we’d keep the back part up for a quasi-tufted headboard.

Best for All Ages: Article Gabriola Ivory Bouclé Love Seat

boucle love seat
Gabriola Ivory Bouclé Love Seat, Article ($699)
Shop

Material: Bouclé, solid wood | Dimensions: 31-by-64-by-34 inches | Fill: Foam

What we like:

  • Solid wood frame (sturdy!)
  • Removable covers and legs
  • Covered in a low-absorption bouclé

Worth noting:

  • On the firmer side, rather than superplushy

Why we chose it: For a style that’ll grow with your kiddos (and that you can enjoy right along with them).

You don’t have to be 10 or younger to enjoy Article’s Gabriola love seat, and that’s exactly why it’s now one of our favorite kid couches. This is the kind of child-friendly sofa that has staying power—it’s large enough for parents or babysitters to enjoy throughout the younger years, and the compact silhouette is suitable for small spaces and little legs. It’s one of the very first pieces of furniture you’ll see when entering designer Erin Fetherston’s L.A. home; her front door opens up next to her kids’ playroom. Fetherston removed the slatted legs, which gives the Gabriola a superlow profile and makes it even easier for her three children to climb up and down from. (A smart tip: The legs can always go back on when the gang is older.)

On Our Radar

P’Kolino Litte Reader Sofa

Little Reader chair in red
P’Kolino Little Reader Sofa, Maisonette ($170)
Shop

This sofa would be the perfect addition to any reading nook, and we’re not just saying that because the side arms feature a built-in pocket to keep your kiddo’s favorite books within close reach. The cushy foam base is wrapped up in stain-resistant fabrics and offers an angular silhouette perfect for sitting up on. And bonus: The middle can fold out into a sleeper for impromptu naps or playtime.

Pottery Barn Teen x West Elm Carmen Sofa

Sofas photo
Carmen Sofa, West Elm ($599)

This floor sofa can be wrapped up in either a velvety performance fabric, nubby bouclé, or neutral twill that will easily transition from the toddler to tween years.

Gray Malin x Cloth Company Settee

Sofas photo
Settee, Gray Malin x Cloth Company ($1,350)
Shop

For a touch of whimsy and heirloom-level quality—we’re talking 100% cotton upholstery and solid wood legs—Maisonette’s made-to-order settee offers a storybook-like illustration pattern that feels fantastical but not too childish. Seriously, we can see your kids passing this one down to their children (and so on and so forth).

Milliard Modular Kids Sofa

Sofas photo
Modular Kids Sofa, Milliard ($160)
Shop

At a quick glance, you’d never guess this small sofa could be dismantled into a bed, lightweight poufs, ottomans, and even a puppet theater. Other review-backed perks: The velour cover is removable and machine washable, and the whole thing arrives in one vacuum-sealed package. Did we mention it’s less than $200?

Our Shopping Checklist

Size

As they’re designed with little humans in mind, the best couches for kids are compact and low-profile, even sitting directly on the ground. Smaller dimensions make it easier for toddlers to crawl on and off safely, especially since playtime inevitably dissolves into roughhousing.

Easy-to-Clean Materials

Spills and stains are bound to happen anytime kids are involved, which is why designers often pick out tight-patterned, textured, or dark fabrics for sofas, as they’re better at hiding the marks that refuse to come out after you’ve tried blotting them up with soap, water, and vinegar without success. Psst: Leather and velvet are actually more durable than parents think, and the real deal will develop a lovely patina over time.

Durability

As we’ve confirmed: Kids are messy. They somehow always seem to have their hands in something, and no matter if you watched them diligently wash their hands, their fingers are still sticky from that peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich at lunch. That’s why we recommend going with performance fabrics. In fact, sofas aside, many designers will opt for tough textiles when upholstering a window-seat cushion or banquette (for example, Kate Hayes of Little Hayes Studio chose an indoor-outdoor–approved fabric from Schumacher for a preteen room). They’re less likely to get threadbare or tear. High-density foam filling is also important to note, as regular foam will more easily misshape with age (though if you don’t plan to keep them for longer than your kid outgrows them, this isn’t a detail to get too hung up on).

The Last Word

The best couches for kids are designed to be the go-to seat for your children from the toddler to tween years. This is the place they’ll (hopefully) go to read, eat a snack, or (let’s face it) binge-watch Peppa Pig on their tablet, so it needs to be as comfy as it is durable.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

One size does not fit all when it comes to couches. Some of us have a barely there living room with space for little more than a love seat. Others have square footage to spare and family members who insist on stretching out on a chaise longue. That’s where modular sofas come in. By mixing and matching the various à la carte pieces—like armless chairs, loungers, ottomans, and corner pieces—you can arrange and rearrange them into various configurations as your space and needs dictate.

“I think that modular sofas are really an opportunity to set the tone, the direction, and the story of your space,” says designer Nate Berkus. “They take up so much real estate that you really should be asking yourself what style you want this enormous investment and percentage of your square footage to be.”

We agree. That’s why, after extensive shopping, we narrowed down the 13 best modular sofas that will allow you to create the semi-custom couch of your furniture dreams.

Width: Up to 121.75 inches | Seats: 3 | Returns: Within 30 days | Upholstery: Varies

What we like:

  • Made of particularly soft flamiber fabric
  • Extra-deep seats make it a prime napping couch

  • The low height may be too low for some with mobility issues
  • Assembly required

Why we chose it: The nubby fabric has made a comeback in recent years, and we’re all about it—especially on this plush seater.

Make the center of your living room design this structured yet oh-so-comfortable Mags, which is available in an assortment of configurations no matter the size of your space or preferred lounging position to rewatch New Girl. It also comes in a variety of upholstery options, like wool blends and velvet, but we’re suckers for the flamiber, a soft, textured bouclé. Our chief creative officer, Kate Berry, can attest to its marshmallowy-ness. You can often find her working from her own Mags. (The wide arms make for a great spot to prop a laptop.)

Her ’70s-inspired modular Muse sofa, available through Design Within Reach, would add a warm vibe to any living room. The exaggerated, sculptural silhouette feels like art but not in a stuffy “don’t touch” museum way. Instead it is functional art you can kick your feet up on, comfortably sinking into the medium-firm foam cushions. As for upholstery, you get to make the tough choice between a creamy bouclé or lush velvet. (The caramel-colored velvet gets our vote.)

The DTC O.G.: Article Beta Sectional

  • Some assembly required

Why we chose it: We can’t decide what we love more—the always-in-style design or direct-to-consumer reduced price.

Since launching in 2013, Article has changed the game of furniture shopping. By offering big-ticket items (like sofas, bed frames, and dining tables) direct to consumers, it nixes a few steps in the supply chain—and slashes a chunk of the cost, too. Its modular Beta sofa is a longtime favorite, with the option to arrange chaise longues in different configurations. Building a Beta into various shapes virtually is almost as fun as when the real deal arrives on your doorstep.

The Budget Beanbag: Urban Outfitters Dylan Velvet Bean Bag Sofa

BeanBagSofa
Dylan Velvet Bean Bag Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($499)
Shop

Why we chose it: Available in three sizes and four cool colors… and the three-seater is under $500? Sign us up.

While the thought of a beanbag sofa might conjure images of dorm rooms past, this grown-up take makes a compelling case for the concept. It comes in four chic hues (from bold blood orange to minimalist ivory) and three sizes (single-, double-, and triple-seater). The legless design is a relaxed variation of the modular sofa, allowing one to stand alone, two two-seaters to bookend a coffee table, or several to cluster together for a lounge statement. While this pick has no reviewer feedback to fall back on, we decided to take a chance on it. That’s because UO offers a one-year furniture warranty and accepts returns within a 30-day window from the delivery date. Plus it’s made in the U.S., if that’s important for your furniture search. Psst: Looking for more under-$500 finds? Right this way.

The Casual Deep-Seater: Sundays Movie Night Modular Sectional

sundays movie night sectional
Movie Night 4-Piece Modular Sectional, Sundays ($4,670)
Shop

Why we chose it: A sink-in sectional that sports deep seats, performance fabric, and removable covers.

Has there ever been a so aptly named sofa? Sundays Movie Night sectional makes us want to plop down with our crew and a tub of popcorn and stay put for hours. Let’s start with the basics: The frame is made from solid wood, and it comes in a regular or condo—smaller width and depth, and cheaper—size. Upholstery is made with performance fabric (re: it’s soft, stain resistant, and moisture repellent), and the covers are fully removable; the cushion covers can be machine washed or dry-cleaned. Some reviewers note that the base is firmer than other similar couches but that it doesn’t retract from their enjoyment of it. Several purchasers note that it’s an ideal family sofa whether you have dogs or kids or both; one shopper even says that “we haven’t left the couch since.” What’s better is the brand offers excellent, reviewer-backed customer service, which includes free in-home delivery and assembly on sofas, and regularly priced items are fully refundable or can be exchanged within 30 days of delivery.

The Polished Mod: West Elm Dalton Modular Sofa

Sofas photo
Dalton Sectional, 2-Piece Sectional in Dijon, West Elm ($3,498)

Width: Varies | Seats: 6 or more | Returns: Within 30 days | Upholstery: Varies

What we like:

  • Dozens of upholstery options
  • White-glove service is included in the flat-rate delivery fee
  • Zip-off cushion covers make for easy cleaning

Worth noting:

  • Not all fabrics are available for all seating configurations

Why we chose it: It’s sleek, it’s stylish, and it’ll stay that way for years (and years) to come.

There’s no getting around it: Modular sofas require major cash. Before clicking “add to cart,” you’ll want to ensure you won’t tire of its design anytime soon. That will never be the case with this West Elm sofa, which evokes both modern and traditional vibes that will look fresh for years to come. Its mod form makes for a stylish spot to converse during a cocktail party, while its soft corners means it’s kid- and pet-friendly, too. Add colorful pillows and a couple throws, then rest easy as it functions for all facets of your life now and for many more years.

The Corduroy Cutie: IKEA Jättebo Modular Sofa

ikea jattebo sofa
Jättebo Modular Sofa, IKEA ($1,740)
Shop

Why we chose it: A fully modular line that incorporates storage and is covered in a unique and luxe-looking upholstery.

Take it from designer Jeremiah Brent: IKEA can indeed exude quiet luxury. Spotted in an Instagram shot from his in-progress Portugal home, the Jättebo sofa looks like it could have been re-covered in a superfancy fabric. It turns out that the trendy corduroy material is straight from the Swedish retailer, too. The thick textile features an extra-wide wale that’s both cozy-looking and soft to the touch, plus the removable covers can be tossed in the washing machine. While we love the verdant green, there are two additional cover options that make switching up a color scheme down the road much easier. As another bonus, the Jättebo line is fully modular, so you can mix and combine the individual one-seaters with chaises (many of which also include storage) to fit any space.

The Stay-a-While Showstopper: &Tradition Develius Modular Sofa

Tradition
&Tradition Develius B Modular Sofa, Finnish Design Shop ($7,200)
Shop

Width: Varies | Seats: Up to 6 | Returns: 14 days | Upholstery: Varies

What we like:

  • A sleek style you’ll never tire of
  • Each sofa is made to order in just 6 to 8 weeks
  • Uses wood sourced from sustainable forests

Worth noting:

  • Tight turnaround return policy

Why we chose it: This oh-so-elegant design marries pretty with practical.

You won’t be shocked to learn a Dutch designer created this utter showstopper of a modular couch. You may be shocked to learn it’s equally as comfortable as it is beautiful, though—a unicorn combination in the couch world. With its deep seats and extra-soft-to-the-touch fabric options, you’ll be tempted to stay (and stay) for hours at a time. Get creative combining the modular pieces, fabrics, and refined colors to create the couch of your dreams. Say, a nubby cream bouclé love seat to cozy up on with your honey, or an elongated navy linen couch with a chaise longue to allow for optimal leg-stretching moments.

How We Chose These Products

A modular sofa is a sizable purchase, both physically and monetarily. That’s why we took this shopping assignment seriously. We scoured the modular sofa options of reputable brands with high design but not necessarily high price points. These couches will last you for years to come, even if you move, add members to your family, or tweak your design style. Each of the above couches would be a comfy place to rest through life’s big and little moments.

Our Shopping Checklist

Design

This wouldn’t be Domino if we didn’t prioritize smart, sleek design above all else. We shopped for modular sofas with cool silhouettes, practical pieces, and last-a-lifetime styles that will make you smile every time you pass your living room.

Upholstery

The more upholstery options, the better. Some of us prefer a stain-resistant performance fabric for both the longevity of the couch and wayward wine spills. Others are down for a less kid- or pet-friendly luxe velvet. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Versatility

The more à la carte pieces a modular sofa offers, the better. “A modular sofa offers great flexibility,” says Berkus, since you can arrange (and rearrange) the pieces Tetris style. “If you need an L-shaped sectional, you can make that out of modular pieces, or you can make a chaise with a corner piece and an ottoman. Or you can break it apart and put a beautiful decorative table in between two sections with a lamp on it.” You don’t have to spend the big bucks for all of the available pieces either, just what works for your space and lifestyle. No need for an ottoman? Great. Only need one corner piece? Also great.

Comfort

Comfort is key when buying a modular sofa. If we couldn’t doze off on these couches during a movie night, they didn’t make the cut. If space allows, deep seats are the most comfortable for guests of all heights (and the occasional nap!), and soft-to-the-touch upholstery is a must. Pay attention to the distance from the top of the cushion to the ground, too, especially if you have long legs.

Q: What truly makes a sofa modular?

Think of a modular sofa like playing with Legos (stick with us here) but your Lego pieces include armless chairs, corner pieces, and chaise longues that snap together (more on that, below) to create various configurations. Each piece is bought à la carte and can stand on its own or be arranged to create various shapes.

Q: What is the difference between a modular and sectional sofa?

“The brass-tacks, fundamental difference between the two is that a modular sofa can be made into a sectional sofa, but a sectional cannot be made into a modular,” says Berkus. Even though a sectional is also broken into multiple pieces, those pieces cannot reconfigure into different shapes like a modular sofa can.

Q: Beyond style and color, how do I choose a modular sofa for my space?

Before clicking “add to cart” on any modular sofa piece, measure where it will reside, then measure again. Use painter’s tape to block out where the pieces could be placed, so you won’t be unpleasantly surprised by how big (or small) they are when they arrive. Also consider any potential obstacles, like slim doorways and how the couch could be viewed from various angles of your living room.

As you’re styling your sofa, Berkus encourages pairing it with pieces from various eras. “I love an Italian ’60s- or ’70s-style modular sofa mixed with classic antiques and Swedish lighting from the ’40s, layered in a way that feels like somebody in that era was decidedly well traveled,” he says. That’s a sure way to up the ante on your modular sofa’s bespoke vibe.

Q: I don’t want to slip between my modular couch pieces while lounging. How do you keep it together?

Rest easy—no one will slip through the cracks. Modular pieces connect with metal “crocodile” clips. Picture a zigzag bracket on one side and a triangle post on the other. The clips should click into place easily, securing your sofa together, and detach just as easily so you can rearrange as desired. To nix any slipping and sliding for the sofa as a whole, place rubber pads beneath the pieces’ legs.

The Last Word

Modular sofas are the “choose your own adventure” of furniture shopping. Consider your square footage, how many people your couch should seat, and whether you like the chaise longue on the left or right. Then mix and match the pieces to your design-minded heart’s desire.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

We’re going to be honest with you because, phew, this guide was a doozy to put together: It is incredibly difficult, if not nearly impossible, to find the best sofa under $500. For starters, best is such a relative term; one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, etc. Secondly, we are of the mindset that a good couch is one of life’s big investment purchases—meaning it’s likely going to cost you more than $500 if you want a well-made, enduring design you won’t grow sick of sitting on every day for years to come. However, it would be entirely imprudent not to acknowledge that both budgets and needs vary when it comes to furniture shopping. So here we are, up to our eyeballs in a polyester pool of mid-century modern designs. (Don’t worry, it gets better.)

After what felt like an innumerable amount of time spent shaking the Internet upside down and sending Slack SOS chats to fellow Domino editors, we narrowed down seven top contenders for the best sofa under $500. How did we make such resolute conclusions from this objective, uphill endeavor? We looked at an ungodly amount of reviews, weighing the firsthand pros and cons, studying how the upholstery appears in actual pictures, and deciding whether or not the sofa in question looked exactly like the five other velvet-upholstered options before it.

Our Under-$500 Favorites

Below, find our prevailing favorites chosen by category—from the best love seats and sectionals to outdoor and sleeper sofas—followed by a handful of runners-up that nearly made the budget cut. And because the under-$500 crowd can lack a bespoke charm, we also padded a small section with tips on how to customize your couch. If you’re still sitting with us, read on. (Also, be sure to check out our running list of the best sofa deals to shop this week.)

Best Love Seat: Alcott Hill Parkes Upholstered Settee

Sofas photo
Parkes 50” Upholstered Settee, Alcott Hill ($490 was $753)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester upholstery; solid wood frame and legs; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 35.5-by-50-by-35 inches | Weight: 67 pounds

What we like:

  • Classic slipper-chair silhouette
  • Spindle front legs
  • Solid wood frame

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 350-pound weight capacity
  • Back cushions are not removable

The under-$500 love seat offerings are teeming with designs that skew a little too traditional (think: chunky square two-seaters) or too modern (think: glam velvet settees with slanted gold legs). In either case, the result is an aesthetic that feels either outdated or kitschy. We really had to dig in order to land this classic style with just enough positive reviews to back it. The slipper silhouette and spindle front legs give off a bespoke British vibe without treading too far into stuffy or overdone territory.

As more than one reviewer points out, the cushions cannot be removed, as the product’s description states, but the fabric itself is described as pretty, durable, and linenlike.

Best Daybed: Queer Eye Wimberly Upholstered Daybed Sofa

Sofas photo
Wimberly Upholstered Daybed, Twin Size, Olive Green Linen, Queer Eye ($420 was $475)
Shop

Materials: Linen upholstery; solid wood frame and metal legs | Dimensions: 79.5-by-43.5-by-35.5 inches | Weight: 83 pounds

What we like:

  • Available in gray or olive-green upholstery; twin or full sizes (both under $500)
  • Secured bentwood slat system

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 250-pound weight capacity
  • Mattress sold separately

A daybed is a clever hack for an affordable deep-seat or sleeper-style sofa; score the frame for under $500, an accompanying mattress for $65, and…voilà! We’re fans of this olive option from Queer Eye’s exclusive Walmart collection—not just because it offers an uncomplicated design and price point but also due to its elevated linen upholstery along with the ability to outfit its mattress in a contrasting cover. (We love this affordable clover-patterned style for the bold and this solid case for the minimalists among us.)

Best Bouclé: Wade Logan Ameriya Upholstered Loveseat

Sofas photo
Ameriya 50” Upholstered Loveseat, Wade Logan ($486 was $510)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester upholstery; solid beechwood frame and legs | Dimensions: 30.5-by-50-by-30.25 inches

What we like:

  • Available in white, dark gray, and turmeric upholstery
  • Stain resistant
  • Marshmallow silhouette

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 600-pound weight capacity
  • Cushions are on the firmer side and not removable

While this sofa is bordering on chair-and-a-half-size territory, its compact size is more than made up for with a generous marshmallowy silhouette and cozy bouclélike upholstery that’s reminiscent of the infamous Gwyneth Paltrow chair. The accompanying reviews call it everything from cute to comfy to perfectly sized for small spaces—with many touting its ease of assembly, which simply includes screwing on the supporting legs. While some reviewers caution that the cushions are firm, there is the assumption that they will soften with time and use.

Best Wood Frame: Baxton Studio 4-Seater Bridgewater Sofa

Sofas photo
72.1″ 4-Seater Bridgewater Sofa with Wood Frame, Baxton Studio ($458)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester upholstery; solid wood frame and legs; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 29.53-by-72.05-by-33.07 inches | Weight: 55 pounds

What we like:

  • Seats up to 4
  • Cushion covers are removable
  • Walnut-wood frame

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 500-pound weight capacity
  • 30-day limited warranty

This clean-lined sofa is a prime example of an affordable mid-century style that doesn’t feel cheap or overdone—thanks to its unencumbered walnut-colored wood frame paired with soothing mauve-toned upholstery. Reviewers note that, aside from firm cushions, the piece is comfortable, sturdy, and well made.

Best Outdoor: Threshold Searsburg Aluminum Deep Seating Patio Loveseat

Sofas photo
Searsburg Aluminum Deep Seating Patio Loveseat, Threshold ($450)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester upholstery; powder-coated aluminum frame | Dimensions: 31.5-by-48.03-by-28.94 inches | Weight: 28.93 pounds

What we like:

  • Weather-resistant aluminum frame
  • Made partially from recycled materials
  • Deep-seat dimensions

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 500-pound weight capacity
  • 1-year limited warranty

Going the budget route when shopping for new outdoor furniture is a big gamble; odds are you’re going to end up with a piece that’ll get you through a season or two before it ultimately succumbs to the elements and needs to be replaced. Our advice? Skip the cheap “wood” options that are suckers for water damage and opt for a frame that’s made of metal—like our favorite under-$500 find here from Target.

Reviewers have dubbed assembly for this two-seater as a less-than-30-minute affair; described its overall design as clean, simplistic, and fancy; and called out the cushions as incredibly soft with a spring-back-into-place sturdiness post-sitting.

Best Sleeper: Mistana Dingler Upholstered Sleeper Sofa

GreenSleeper
Dingler 77” Upholstered Sleeper Sofa, Mistana ($316 was $760)
Shop

Materials: 100% linen upholstery; solid wood and manufactured wood frame; solid wood legs; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 33-by-77-by-32.5 inches | Weight: 101.5 pounds

What we like:

  • 100% linen upholstery
  • Sloped-arm silhouette
  • Multiposition back converts into a twin-size bed or lounge position

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 600-pound weight capacity
  • Cushions are not removable

We did a double take upon discovering this 100% linen sleeper in the raging sea of polyester options. As an added bonus to its A+ upholstery and understated silhouette (we appreciate a softly sloped arm), the Wayfair gem comes backed by a lot of buzz (we’re talking 3,000-plus 5-star reviews).

Highlights range from shoppers touting it as easy to assemble and spot-clean to commenting on how beautiful and expensive the material looks in person. More than one points out that houseguests are unable to guess this sofa’s true sleeper identity. As far as comfort goes, the cushions are described as being on the firmer side for sleeping—but that’s nothing a twin-size mattress topper won’t fix when it’s time to transform it into sleep mode.

Best Deep Seat: Amazon Square-Arm Chenille Sofa

Sofas photo
71.25″ Square-Arm Chenille Sofa, Amazon ($429)
Shop

Materials: Chenille upholstery; metal frame; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 33.07-by-71.25-by-27.5 inches

What we like:

  • Assembly tools included
  • Low-profile frame
  • 750-pound weight capacity

Worth noting:

  • Covers are removable and washable
  • Cushions are removable
  • Sturdy metal frame

While Amazon isn’t our go-to for big furniture buys, the Internet is not exactly overflowing with big comfy couches for under $500—so here we are. The reviews on this surprisingly good-looking deep-seater, while limited, are for the most part overwhelmingly positive. What really drove our decision home, however, were the pictures, which showcase the questionable chenille upholstery as looking smooth and almost linenlike instead of cheap and spotty. One reviewer even notes that the covers, apart from being soft and wearing well, are removable and can be tossed in the wash.

A handful of shoppers likened the vibe of this sofa to that of the IKEA Kivik or Rove Concepts Porter, a very tricky aesthetic to find for under $500.

Best Beanbag: Urban Outfitters Dylan Velvet Bean Bag Sofa

Materials: 100% velvet-polyester upholstery; expanded polystyrene-bead fill | Dimensions: 71-by-35-by-28 inches Weight: 33 pounds

What we like:

  • Arrives fully assembled
  • Spot-clean only

Worth noting:

  • Made to order in the U.S.
  • Lightweight

This pick is the only sofa on our list lacking firsthand reviewer feedback—but we decided to take a chance. After all, UO offers a one-year furniture warranty and accepts returns within a 30-day window from the delivery date. While the thought of a beanbag sofa might conjure up haunting images of dorm rooms past, this sophisticated iteration makes a compellingly chic case. It comes in four subtly retro hues (from bold blood orange to minimalist ivory) and three sizes (single-, double-, and triple-seater). The legless design feels less like a bag of beans made for kids and undergrads and more like a variation of the modular sofa trend, with the ability to stand alone or cluster together for a playfully stylish lounge statement.

Best Slipcovered: Lark Manor Alonnie Upholstered Sofa

Sofas photo
Alonnie Upholstered Sofa, Lark Manor ($490 was $1,340)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester-linen upholstery; metal frame; plastic legs; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 36.75-by-75-by-30 inches Weight: 79.25 pounds

What we like:

  • Removable cushions and covers
  • Rolled armrests
  • Linenlike upholstery

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools not included
  • 750-pound weight capacity
  • 1-year limited warranty

Searching for one of the best slipcovered sofas under $500 was, as Cher Horowitz put it, like searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie—but we did the best we could, folks. This Wayfair winner was one of the only true slipcovered options we could wrangle that features an uncomplicated, classic silhouette (we love a rolled arm and skirted base), linenlike upholstery, and decent reviewer feedback—all of which points toward the piece being a more than decent purchase for the price point.

Let’s start with the cons first: The cushions are described as stiff, and the upholstery a bit thick (one reviewer called it “denimlike”). These two main points of contention don’t strike us as total deal breakers, as they can be easily remedied with a few of our upgrade hacks, featured below—read on to see what we mean. As for the pros: It’s easy to assemble (we’re talking 10 minutes), looks better in person (peep the pictures), and holds the washable promise of growing softer with time.

Best Sectional: Amazon Reversible L-Shaped Sectional Sofa

Sofas photo
80″ Reversible L-Shaped Sectional Sofa, Tbfit ($400)
Shop

Materials: Linen-cotton upholstery; solid wood frame and legs | Dimensions: 54-by-80-by-30.75 inches Weight: 132 pounds

What we like:

  • Linen-cotton upholstery
  • Bolster cushions included
  • Movable chaise longue

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 660-pound weight capacity
  • Available in ivory beige, dark gray, and brown PU leather

We’ll end with the most monumental triumph on our list: an actually attractive, reviewer-vetted sectional sofa for under $500. How did we select it? For starters, it’s covered in cotton-linen upholstery and made from a solid wood frame securely situated atop wood legs paired with metal interior support reinforcement. What further sets it apart from the synthetic, manufactured rest is an understated silhouette and soft ivory-beige colorway—a rarity in the harshly mid-century modern–style, 50-shades-of-gray group that we fought through to find it. Then there’s the customizability of the L-shaped sofa, featuring a movable chaise that can reconfigure to sit left, right, or function separately as an independent ottoman. And to top it all off, the bonus of two included bolster cushions.

Positive feedback from Amazon reviewers dubs it the “perfect neutral couch” as well as the ideal sofa size for a small space or studio apartment. Others even tout the cushion covers as being easy to remove and toss in the wash. Negative feedback commonly touches on the piece’s low profile (which one reviewer remedied by replacing the legs—more on that, below) and overall small size for a sectional sofa. As far as comfort goes, the consensus is that its cushions are substantial and surprisingly cozy.

Best Vintage: Kaiyo Conover Chair Company Upholstered Skirted Sofa

Sofas photo
Conover Chair Company Upholstered Skirted Sofa, Kaiyo ($293 was $1,000)
Shop

Materials: Polyester upholstery; solid wood frame and legs | Dimensions: 90-by-31-by-35 inches

What we like:

  • 75% off discount
  • One-of-a-kind piece

Worth noting:

  • Gently used
  • Sales are final

Another strategy for scoring the best sofa under $500 is to go the vintage route. Aside from scouring Facebook Marketplace and thrifting at local antiques haunts, we’re partial to surfing the deeply discounted offerings from used homewares site Kaiyo (think of it like the RealReal for couches). Our latest favorite? This pretty patterned sofa with a skirted bottom and chic rolled arms. Be sure to check the product descriptions and pictures closely for signs of wear and tear; this particular couch is described as “gently used,” which, judging from pictures, looks nearly new to our deal-hungry eyes. However, even those sofas that seem a little worse for wear can be given a new lease on life with a reupholstery project—or with a good-looking couch cover tossed on top. (See two other vintage Kaiyo favorites, below.)

Our Just-Over-$500 Favorites

While, yes, this is a story about sofas under $500, we couldn’t resist tossing in a few top contenders that missed the mark by a couple of bucks. And in some cases, a couple hundred. However, getting what you want—especially where good design is concerned—is worth the extra investment. All of our runners-up are under $1,000, come vetted with positive reviews, and feature enticing materials—from a cane settee by Leanne Ford to a cloudlike couch with down-filled cushions to even a blue leopard love seat.

How to Upgrade an Under-$500 Sofa

If we learned one thing on our hunt for the best sofa under $500, it’s that the options—aesthetically speaking—are limited. Even if your shopping situation sticks you in this mainly polyester pool of mid-century modern–style couches, you can still make a budget-friendly breaststroke toward the design-forward deep end. Whether it’s swapping out those garishly gold legs for a black ash wood set, hiding the spotty chenille upholstery beneath a striped slipcover, or cozying up the stiff cushions with a stylish topper, these easy tweaks will help customize your sofa to fit your particular taste.

1. Change Out the Legs for a More Custom Look

2. Use a Couch Cover or Bed Linens to Hide Cheap Upholstery

3. Layer in a Topper for Extra Cushioning
