It seems like all of our favorite design studios and retailers have dropped new sectional sofas and side tables over the past few months if not days. To help you get a handle on all of the powder-coated aluminum, weather-resistant wicker, and plush Sunbrella-covered cushions fresh on the market, we plucked the most noteworthy brand additions and organized each by newness, below—and there’s more to come. If summer soirees and backyard barbecues aren’t already on your mind, they will be shortly.

Serena & Lily

Stripes are going strong in Serena & Lily’s outdoor furniture introductions. Pair the graphic Sundial chaise with, say, a tiny wicker table meant to hold an umbrella and perhaps a glass of Sancerre, and you’ve created the ultimate beach house vibe.

Summer is for lounging, and Article’s new Lubek collection is making us want to read, nap, and repeat. Low-to-the-ground acacia wood platform frames give the pieces a simple, modern look that will never go out of style. Plus it’s tough to find quality upholstered outdoor seating for less than $799.

Neighbor

Courtesy of Neighbor

DTC furniture brand Neighbor recently launched the XY collection, and we’re loving the earthy palette. Tubular steel with a powder-coated finish makes the pieces durable and easy to clean. To keep things comfy, the chairs come with a removable cushion made of quick-dry foam and fadeproof Sunbrella fabric. Fun fact: The table base also doubles as an umbrella stand.

Desigh Within Reach

Courtesy of DWR

Designer Gabriel Tan was inspired by the idea of creating “soft islands” that feel like private getaways, which explains the rounded edges and soothing shapes in his Softlands outdoor collection for DWR. The chair, which also comes in sofa and chaise longue sizes, is made of teak, all-weather rope, and removable cushions with quick-dry foam filling and UV-resistant Sunbrella fabric. The coffee table also comes in a side table size and is made from ceramic stone and slatted teak.

Crate & Barrel

Courtesy of Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel’s new Anguilla outdoor collection offers seating in every size imaginable. From a seven-piece U-shaped configuration to a single lounge chair, the assortment could find a place in nearly any backyard. Durable solid teak frames and weather- and fade-resistant acrylic fabric mean you’ll be able to enjoy it for many summers to come.

CB2

Courtesy of CB2

Even though these are brand-new pieces, they may look slightly familiar; that’s because the same design was used in an indoor bouclé version introduced a few years back. Both are from CB2’s collaborations with Ross Cassidy, and we’re so into the wicker version that we’d consider using it indoors, too.

Arhaus

Courtesy of Arhaus

We’re loving the Togo-esque look of these new laid-back loungers. The low-slung seats are upholstered in bleach-cleanable, fade-resistant, anti-mildew, and eco-friendly fabric, with frames made from 100% marine-grade engineered hardwood that’s reinforced with steel hardware fittings. You can configure the different sizes to create a sectional or just enjoy a seat for one.

West Elm

Courtesy of West Elm

Does it get any more coastal grandma than West Elm’s new Westport collection? Made from handwoven all-weather recycled wicker, it basically turns any backyard into a scene from Nancy Meyers’s Something’s Gotta Give. The wide arms double as a surface for drinks or snacks, setting you up for prime relaxation.

RH

Courtesy of RH

We’re digging the tubular shapes in RH’s new Vigo teak collection. The cushions are sold separately and offered in a whopping 73 fabric options. You can also choose from natural or aged teak, both of which are “from forests regulated by Indonesia’s Sustainable Forest Management system, designed to promote the sustainability of future teak harvests.”

“I don’t know if you know this, but apartments in New York are tiny,” jokes Ryan Dziadul, vice president of PR and business development at Jonathan Adler. So when he and his husband (and their new dog, GoGo) moved into a new roomier apartment in Manhattan’s Midtown East neighborhood, they were thrilled to see it came with a terrace, which they planned to use as another room.

Photography by Ryan Dziadul

The only problem? The outdoor space is only about 4 feet wide, and even though they wanted it to be where they’d sip their morning coffee, eat dinner, and unwind at the end of the day, a traditional round outdoor umbrella just wouldn’t fit. Enter the half-round outdoor umbrella, which Dziadul’s husband found on Amazon and for only $60. “I did not know there was such a thing,” he admits. “But we’ve had it for two weeks and it’s already a game changer.”

Now the pair can dine alfresco even when it’s drizzling, and when the sun hits the terrace during the day, they can lounge in the shade. With the twist of a knob, Dziadul can easily put the umbrella up or down (though he says on his particular one, the directions are backward), and it’s sturdy enough to withstand New York’s windy winter and prespring showers.

You don’t need a tiny terrace to use one in your own space. The half-round shape is ideal next to fences and walls or in cramped outdoor spaces. Dziadul’s favorite feature? The sunny orange color, though it’s available in five other shades, too. “I like to think it’s a treat for the neighbors across the street,” he says. “It’s not only a gift for us, but a gift for them.”

When you own a cabin in Tillamook, Oregon, the ultimate luxury is having a hot tub. “I feel like the hot tub culture here is pretty strong,” says Karie Higgins. The weather has a lot to do with it: It’s rainy and chilly for a huge chunk of the year. It wasn’t long after Higgins turned her home on the Wilson River into an Airbnb that she had guests making comments like, “It’d just be so amazing if you had a hot tub as well.” “And we were like, we think so, too,” Higgins says.

The problem was finding something that would jell with the rest of the home’s Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. Higgins wasn’t about to stick a 40-jet, plastic-lined tub on the deck and call it a day. “I felt like it needed to be something that was more natural and minimal than that,” she says. As most things go now, Higgins was served the perfect solution via Instagram ad. A new company out of Canada called Goodland that makes a cedar-clad wood-burning tub caught her eye. She got on the preorder list ASAP.

Now Higgins admits her family uses their hot tub even in the summertime. “You come out of the river, hop in there—it’s amazing,” she says. Soak in these basic facts, pros, and cons about Goodland’s hot tub to see if it’s right for your outdoor space.

How does it work?

Like a wood stove you might find inside a cabin, Goodland’s tub gets its warmth from you making a fire and using the energy produced by the flames to produce heat. Luckily, it doesn’t take a ton of materials to get it going. After you’ve filled the basin with water, you’ll need paper, an armful of dry kindling, matches, and some firewood to get started. It typically takes around 90 minutes to heat the tub up, and once you’re in, you can let the fire smolder during your soak or add more logs as necessary to keep it going. It’s a hands-on process, but that’s exactly the point. “I just love the fact that it’s slow-burning,” says Higgins. “You’re out there stoking it, picking up bits of kindling from the land—it’s a lovely ritual. It’s not just like, ‘Okay, let’s jump in the tub.’”

What does it cost?

The hot tub and everything that comes with it (from the red cedar slats to the drainage kit) is listed at $6,295. While there are certainly cheaper hot tub options on the market, there are also more expensive ones. On Goodland’s FAQ, the brand argues that the cost encompasses the quality of materials and craftsmanship. For instance, the aluminum interior is 6061 marine aluminum, a more expensive grade due to its corrosion resistance.

What’s the delivery time?

Right now, Goodland boasts a three- to five-week-long delivery wait. The tub itself is delivered by a truck on a pallet and placed at the curb of your property. The whole thing weighs around 125 pounds, so anywhere from two to four people should be able to move it to your desired location. Then there is some further assembly required. “Basically, you screw all the big, metal components like the chimney together and put the cedar planks around the side,” explains Higgins. “It’s a little bit of a process, but it was relatively easy.”

Where should you put it?

Knowing that the river can flood in the winter, Higgins and her husband didn’t want to put their tub too close to the water, but they still wanted it to feel totally separate from the house. “We’ve got it sort of beyond our firepit, so you’re out there. You feel like you’re by yourself,” she says.

How many people can fit in it?

For Higgins, the most comfortable arrangement has been two adults. Or if the kids are around, one adult and three little ones.

Do you need to change out the water?

You don’t need to drain the hot tub with each use. Goodland suggests the water can last for up to two weeks. But in Higgins’s case, where a variety of bathers are frequently soaking in the tub, she changes it with each visit. “The lovely thing is it only takes an hour to fill it back up,” she says.

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.“ That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

The sound of crackling flames, clinking glasses, and fireside chatter could lure just about anyone—and there’s no need to hike to a campsite to get it. The easiest way to extend the entertaining season (perhaps even year-round, depending on how low the temperature dips in your neck of the woods) is with a freestanding firepit. Now that two-thirds of U.S. homeowners say a pit is a vital feature of their ideal outdoor living space, designs have become more artful—to the point they can be mistaken as a backyard sculpture. Recent releases are also smokeless, lightweight enough to port around, or come with a top to double as a table.

“Adding one to your outdoor living experience can provide a focal point that is both functional and beautiful,” says Brittney Herrera, a Portland, Oregon–based interior designer and founder of Wildwood House, an online and brick-and-mortar shop that sells curated homewares from a diverse network of artisans and manufacturers. We checked in with Herrera, along with a few other design experts, to bring you the best firepits for any outdoor setting.

Our Favorites

Best Portable: Solo Stove Bonfire

bonfire solo stove 2.0
Bonfire Firepit, Solo Stove ($300)
Shop

Material: Stainless steel | Fuel type: Wood or pellets | Accessories: Nylon carrying case, pellet adapter, stand

Why we chose it: This lightweight pit fires up in an instant, sans smoke.

Solo Stove makes one of the more innovative models on the market, featuring a unique double-wall design and ventilation system that allows for smoke-free burning in every size of its firepits. No watering eyes, smelly sweatshirts, or having to play musical chairs to avoid smoggy clouds. You (and your neighbors) will appreciate that, especially if you’re in an urban setting or where houses and yards are close to one another. Plus it’s compact, at 19.5-by-19.5-by-14-inches and weighing just 20 pounds, so it’s also lightweight enough to tout around the yard or take your flames on the road, since it’s safe to light up on pretty much any surface. One reviewer, who was nervous about placing it on their exposed aggregate patio, used a laser thermometer to confirm the base temperature hovered at 75 degrees, whereas the opening was upwards of 200.

Best Amazon Find: Tiki Patio Firepit

Tiki Patio Firepit
Tiki Patio Firepit, Amazon ($317 was $395)
Shop

Material: Powder-coated stainless steel | Fuel type: Wood | Accessories: Stand, fabric cover

Why we chose it: Not too big, not too small—this powder-coated pit gives off an impressive 4-foot heat radius.

From the same people who brought you the backyard tiki torch more than 60 years ago, the Tiki brand knows how to keep things lit, and it is available to shop at Amazon. Its patent-pending internal airflow system makes for easy, long-lasting fires that are relatively smokeless, ones you can start enjoying in as soon as two days’ time if you have a Prime membership. Shoppers were impressed with the packaging, and this pit is basically ready to go right out of the box. The powder-coated black exterior, made from 16-gauge stainless steel, features a tiki torch–inspired slat design; plus it comes with its own stand and weatherproof cover. And if you opt for the “instant light” wood pellets, you can spend more time getting warm by the fire rather than canvassing the yard for sticks and twigs. Then once the ashes cool, a pull-out pan makes cleanup a breeze.

Best Value: Solo Stove Mesa XL

mesa tabletop fire pit in olive green finish
Mesa XL, Solo Stove ($99 was $150)
Shop

Material: Faux concrete | Fuel type: Wood | Accessories: Poker

Why we chose it: Tight on budget or space? This pint-size pit may be the biggest bang for your buck.

Not all of us have the space or budget for a massive firepit. If you’re limited on both, there may be no better option than the Mesa. Slightly larger than a football, it weighs no more than 2 pounds, ships with a carrying case, and comes in five fun finishes like deep olive and navy blue. “I have a Bonfire, but this Mesa XL is the perfect size to have a nice, usable fire but small enough to quickly clean up,” one reviewer notes. “So much easier to pull this out than my big one for a quick fire.”

Best Multipurpose: Neighbor Rook Fire Table

Concrete outdoor fire pit table
Rook Fire Table, Neighbor ($4,240)
Shop

Material: Fiberglass-reinforced concrete, teak | Fuel type: Gas | Accessories: None

Why we chose it: A slatted cover disguises this pit as a coffee table when the fire goes out.

Neighbor’s latest outdoor offering has more to offer than just flames—part firepit, part table, this concave-shaped concrete bowl is an entertainer’s dream. Choose between either the natural gas or propane option (both are filled with professional-grade lava rocks for even heating) and three earthy finishes (a natural stone, terracotta, or charcoal gray). The slatted top—a brand signature, made with FSC-certified teak—perfectly covers the opening, so it’s always a centerpiece to gather around no matter the time of year. We also love that this ships for free and you have 45 days to decide whether it works in your space or not.  Psst: If you’re looking for a firepit that functions as a table while in use, we’d like to point you in the direction of Anthropologie’s Terrazzo square design.

Best for Cooking: Outer Firepit Cooking Set

Firepit Table Cooking Set, Outer
Firepit Table Cooking Set, Outer ($4,100 was $4,300)
Shop

Material: Concrete | Fuel type: Gas | Accessories: Griddle pan, stand

Why we chose it: This three-in-one firepit means you can do more than roast s’mores.

Not all firepits are food-safe, but this model by Outer is specifically designed with eating over an open flame in mind. While it’s a splurgy purchase, it’s totally worth the investment if alfresco is your favorite way to hang. The modern concrete shell features a small opening lined with ceramic stones that can easily be covered to convert into a coffee table, and it can be topped with a cast-iron grill and stands to roast everything from meat to veggies. Aside from their aesthetic value, the accessories can also prevent wind from snuffing out your heat source. The edges are wide enough to simultaneously hold plates of food, bottles, and cups while the fire still works its magic.

Best for Large Gatherings: CB2 Rectangular Firepit

CB2 Rectangular Firepit in black
Rectangular Firepit, CB2 ($479 was $599)
Shop

Material: Iron | Fuel type: Wood | Accessories: None

Why we chose it: A modern rectangular design at a great price.

At their core, firepits are all about simplicity. This version from CB2 epitomizes that ideal with its clean lines and craftsmanship. The black iron construction and heat-resistant finish makes for an extremely durable pit (but do cover it in inclement weather). The interior grate enhances airflow for even burning and keeps the bottom of the pit from overheating; just don’t forget to place it on a fire-resistant material like brick or stone. We also love its size and shape—measuring 48-by-24-by-15.5 inches, the coffee-table proportions make it an ideal choice for outdoor seating areas.

“This is a nice, big firepit for the price,” one reviewer writes. Another adds, “The design is gorgeous, and our friends compliment our backyard all the time. We get plenty of heat from the fires we build. My husband thinks this is the best purchase we made for the backyard so far.”

Best Portable: Solo Stove Bonfire

Pack & Carry S Fireplace
Pack & Carry Fireplace, Snow Peak ($150)
Shop

Material: Stainless steel | Fuel type: Wood | Accessories: Stand, base plate, grill bridge, nylon bag

Why we chose it: Sturdy stainless steel that folds flat.

Most firepits are designed to stay in one place. But what if you want to take your flames on the road, say for a camping trip or to a second home? At a mere 10 inches wide and 8 inches tall, this 4-pound find is our favorite for its portability. Designed and manufactured in Japan, we fondly think of it like metal origami; the triangular base—one reviewer refers to it as an inverted pyramid—is fully collapsible so you can easily slip it into its nylon carry case. A shopper who bought it for a fly-fishing trip in Idaho declared, “It’s the best piece of camp gear I’ve bought in 40 years.” Another adds, “This item is a gem for a small fire…I can tell it will last a very long time.” If you need it to whip up grub after a long hike, add on the adjustable grill bridge for a convertible cooktop that also folds flat.

Best Tabletop: Terraflame Basin Fire Bowl

Material: Concrete | Fuel type: Gel fuel | Accessories: Skewers set, snuffer tool

Basin Fire Bowl Table Top
Basin Fire Bowl Table Top, Terraflame ($100)
Shop

Why we chose it: No backyard? No problem.

Not all of us are lucky enough to live somewhere with a big outdoor area outfitted with a deck or patio. If you’re craving the ambient sound and light of a crackling wood fire but have nowhere to put a pit, Terraflame scratches that itch with its small space-friendly styles. The brand’s tabletop collection is top-notch—choose between four sculptural styles in a range of earth tones that are all hand-cast and compact enough to fit comfortably on a bistro table. Plus the cork-lined bottom will protect surfaces from scratches. All you need to get a fire started is popping open a fuel can that’s designed to disappear into the center opening; you’ll see nothing but the dazzling flames.

Best Low-Profile: Terrain Low-Profile Firepit

Low Profile Round Fire Pit
Low Profile Round Firepit, Terrain ($130 was $448)
Shop

Material: Steel | Fuel type: Wood | Accessories: None

Why we chose it: This one will patina beautifully in the long run.

The low-slung circular design of Terrain’s firepit evokes traditional campfires, making it a good fit if you’re looking for a style that will blend in with its surroundings. Its ample 39.5-inch diameter is ideal for permanent installations, particularly since the raw Corten steel construction’s rustic red finish can leave residue on your hands if moved. And although this is preoxidized, note that the pit’s color will naturally change over time and further rusting can occur, which may result in staining the ground below.

Best for Harsh Climates: Stahl Firepit

Stahl Firepit
Steel Firepit, Stahl ($1,049)
Shop

Material: Aluminum or raw steel | Fuel type: Wood | Accessories: Sold separately

Why we chose it: Doubles as art but is far more durable than it looks.

This pit is Herrera’s choice, who tells us the brand is building a big following throughout the Northwest. “We like our Stahl firepit for its sculptural, modern form and the way it patinas over time,” she says. Plus it’s something to gaze at even when there are no flames dancing within it. That’s true whether you choose the raw steel finish or anodized aluminum in black or silver. Assembly is simple—just slot the puzzlelike sections together and you’re ready for a fire. The rugged materials can withstand the elements, and the nonwelded construction means there’s no chance of it falling apart over time.

More Firepits We Love

Firepits come in a range of sizes and styles, which is why we also have dedicated guides to tablese and smokeless and tabletop versions. Many deep dives into the category have taught us that most options under $200 start to look the same or are a little chintzy. So we dug around for a few affordable designs—from elevated bases to fun finishes in a cheery yellow—that look good but also won’t rust after just a week of use.

Our Shopping Checklist

Size

This is mostly a matter of portability and how big your typical crowd is. If the firepit is going to stay in the same spot, you don’t have to worry much about its size. However, if you plan to move it around the yard or take it with you on vacation (or your next place), look for a model that will be easy to lift in and out of a car—say 20 pounds or less. As for crowd size, a round firepit that’s about 20 inches in diameter will fit a couple chairs comfortably, while one that’s 36 inches can host up to eight chairs.

Material

All firepits are built to withstand high heat, making them inherently durable. But some materials are more weather resistant than others. If you live near the coast, for example, 304-grade stainless steel will withstand harsh salt water. Iron and anodized aluminum are other highly durable metals. Still other materials are designed to take on a patina over time. Raw stainless steel, which doesn’t have the same protective finish as the 304, will darken with age, while Corten steel will develop a reddish patina. Cast concrete is a nonmetal option that’s suited to less extreme climates.

Safety

Every year thousands of people sustain burns and other injuries from firepits. To minimize risk, enforce the 3-foot rule for kids and pets, keeping them that distance from the pit at all times. Make sure anything combustible, like blankets and clothing, is also a few feet from an open flame. For good measure, have a hose, bucket of water, or a shovel and dirt nearby in case you need to douse the fire in a hurry. Finally, never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start wood fires. Old-fashioned newspaper and twigs or other kind of kindling is the only way to go.

Ask Domino

Q: Is it safe to leave a firepit on a deck?

Yes, but for starters, a firepit should be at least 10 feet away from anything that can catch on fire, including your house. So unless it’s a big deck, that distance requirement could be a deal breaker. And if the deck itself is made of wood, you will need to place the pit on a fireproof pad or other heat-resistant surface—for example, tiles made of metal or ceramic.

Q: How do I clean my firepit?

Firepits are fairly fuss-free. You just need to get rid of the ashes after each use. Some models have pull-out ash pans, similar to the tray on a toaster oven. With smaller firepits, you can simply turn them upside down. Either way, remember to let the firepit and ashes cool before cleaning. And even ashes that have grayed over might still have heat in their core, so be sure to wet them down in a noncombustible container before disposing of them with the household trash.

Q: What’s better—wood or gas?

If the goal is maximum nostalgia, opt for a wood-burning firepit. You can’t beat the smoldering aroma, and the flickering flames are perfect for roasting marshmallows. But if you just want to create a little ambience out back with instant startup and minimal upkeep, gas is the way to go.

The Last Word

The best firepits are the centerpiece of your backyard. There may be no cozier place to gather than near the crackling flames, especially if s’mores are involved. Our favorite finds range in durable materials (steel, cement); come in a range of sizes (for big backyards and small balconies), and pull double duty either as tables or grills.

Many of us spent a large chunk of the past few years renovating and redecorating our homes, and outdoor spaces also got in on the fun. But if, in a tizzy, you went for something a little on the cheap side or you’re finally ready to go all out, a standout sectional should be your first stop. Similar to the way a sofa anchors a living or family room, an outdoor sectional will set the mood for all of your alfresco activities. But there’s one big difference when it comes to open-air loungers: durability.

“Your outdoor furniture should absolutely last you more than just a couple of seasons,” says Allison Messner, cofounder and CEO of Yardzen, a virtual landscape design company. She says that fabrics should be comfortable enough to lounge on for hours, but also tough enough to withstand the sun’s harsh rays, unforeseen rain showers, and a spill or two of wine.

We’ve handpicked the best outdoor sectionals that are both well designed and durable for lounging on all season long (and for years to come). This way you can get back to planning the menu for your first-of-the-season garden gathering—or just finally realizing that new backyard escape.

Best Designer Collab: Crate & Barrel Jeannie Teak Outdoor Sectional by Leanne Ford

crate and barrel leanne ford outdoor sectional
Jeannie 3-Piece Teak Outdoor Sectional by Leanne Ford, Crate & Barrel ($5,297)
Shop

Crate & Barrel’s Jeannie sectional was designed by none other than Leanne Ford as part of her latest collection for the brand. The designer focused on alfresco entertaining and backyard living, and she recently told Domino the idea was to make “being lazy look really beautiful.” Simple, fail-proof outdoor furniture, tabletop, and decor are all included—but the sectional is the star.

Made from sustainably sourced solid teak, the “maximally plumped” sofa is ideal for catnaps but also for hosting. Case in point: Its plush poly-foam cushions are covered in stain- and fade-resistant Inside Out performance fabric, and the cantilevered armrests are wide enough to safely support a drink. The slatted back, mitered corners, and angled legs all add to an architectural look—and that teak? It’ll patina beautifully over time.

Best Value: Walker Edison Macae 4-Piece Outdoor Sectional

Walker Edison outdoor sectional
Walker Edison Macae 4-Piece Outdoor Sectional Set, Amazon ($1,783)
Shop

If you’re looking to quickly outfit a patio with no fretting over surfaces or additional seating, consider the Macae set. Landing on the product page with no context might lead you to believe you’ll just be getting a sofa. But if you read the fine print, you’ll realize this is a four-piece set complete with two sofas, a chair, and a coffee table. Available on Amazon with exceptionally quick delivery, this 4-star-rated quartet is one to watch regularly, as it can go on sale in spurts. Reviewers report that the light powder-coated aluminum and polysynthetic wood frame is easy to assemble; plus the whole shebang—which is rust-, water-, and UV resistant—is pretty sturdy. Shoppers also note that the cushions are well filled and the fabric feels durable, but if you’re not diligent about stashing them in inclement weather, you may want to replace them with a darker option. Others remark about how helpful the modular design is. “I like that this is configurable,” one reviewer says. “I can always rearrange into an L-shape as well. The Amazon delivery person brought it straight up the elevator to my place.”

Best All-Weather Wicker: Serena & Lily Pacifica Corner Sectional

Outdoor Furniture photo
Pacifica Corner Sectional, Serena & Lily ($7,105 was $7,998)

Yes, it’s an investment, but this wicker sectional is worth it if you’ve recently settled into your forever home or are looking for a serious outdoor living upgrade. The woven resin provides an exceptionally hard-wearing, long-lasting update to the classic wicker look. The cushions feature an all-weather foam and polyester fill, and the removable covers come in the brand’s performance fabrics, which resist mildew, repel water, and hold up against sunlight and storms without fading. Plus the cushions attach to the frame with Velcro to prevent slippage. Trust us: Once you sit down, you’re not going to want to get up.

Best Aluminum: Outer Aluminum Outdoor 4-Seat Sectional

Weatherproof aluminum combines with memory foam cushions in Outer’s four-seat sectional. The piece includes two armless chairs, one corner chair, and one sectional chair, which all combine to suit the space you have and the company you keep. The lightweight frame, covered by a 10-year limited warranty, requires no assembly (surprising, huh?). All you have to do is take it out of the box, toss the cushions on, and you’re ready to go.

On those cushions, which carry a five-year limited warranty, you’ll find machine washable, UV-resistant fabric that covers memory foam typically seen in mattresses. We prefer the lighter colorways, but that’s up to you. The brand’s patented weather-resistant cover, called OuterShell, is integrated so you can seamlessly pull it over the backrest and bottom cushion when you’re finished lounging. It attaches with two Velcro tabs and has a handle for easy toting and lets you skip fighting with a cover that must be kept elsewhere. If you’re stumped on where to start, Outer offers free design consultations and fabric swatches; you can also chat with a product specialist or visit a showroom.

Best Teak: Neighbor Outdoor Sectionals

Configurable when it comes to size, orientation, and arm style, Neighbor’s Haven and Bluff sectionals have a lot going for them, and then some. There are a number of carefully considered design choices, all of which start with an FSC-certified teak frame that reads a little Scandinavian, a little Californian. For the former, there are seven Sunbrella performance fabric choices, including a chic rust and soothing moss, that are durable and stain-resistant. Reviewers add that Haven’s cushions, which can be secured to the frame by ties, are thick and comfortable. The back support is constructed from polyester rope, and marine-grade, stainless steel hardware is corrosion resistant. Bluff, a recent addition to the brand’s assortment, currently only comes in parchment and graphite. Its extra-deep seats dial into the cozy factor with downlike throw pillows; they give the illusion of floating and are subtly held upright by a hidden powder-coated steel frame inside the cushions.

No matter which you go with, you can enjoy the added perks of free shipping and a 45-day trial. Plus delivery is estimated within one to two weeks. And if you’d like to slip in a surface for drinks or as a plant perch, the brand just launched an in-line table that works modularly with the lounge system.

Best Natural Rattan: Woven Natura Sectional

Natura Four Seat L-Shape Sectional with rattan frame

Confession: We’ve been thinking about Woven’s sustainably harvested, curvy rattan frame ever since it dropped back in April. We’re confident Natura could transform your backyard into a Mediterranean oasis. While there are a lot of wicker look-alike sectionals out there—and a few on this list—Woven’s stands out for its 100% natural base (yes, it will patina over time) and compostable foam-filled cushions wrapped in upcycled fabric made from plastic water bottles. We love that it’s quasi-customizable, meaning you can choose between a small, four-seater for tighter spaces like a balcony, or five-, six-, and even seven-seaters that come in corner-, U-, and L-shaped configurations for sprawling porches and back decks.

To keep this beauty looking fresh as long as possible, upkeep is required. We recommend covering it in between uses (Woven sells a custom-tailored one, by the way), using a pressure hose if you start to notice any organic matter growing; oil it every month or so to keep it from cracking, too. Other noteworthy details: Your first order is eligible for a 15% discount (it is a pretty steep price tag, but the unique qualities should make it worth the splurge), and you have 60 days to decide whether or not it’s a fit for you.

Best Small Space: Target Opalhouse Latigo Patio Sectional

Target’s all-weather, rust-resistant, steel-wicker Latigo is functional and on trend—all at a very friendly price point. The L-shape fits neatly into the smallest of spaces, like narrow decks and balconies, while the chaise longue invites reclining with a good book or glass of rosé. The neutral cushions and frame allow you to make it your own with bright pillows or an eclectic throw.

Best Classic: West Elm Playa Outdoor Reversible Sectional

Another great option for smaller areas, this West Elm find is exactly what Messner means when she says to look for transitional styles in hardy materials. The solid eucalyptus and mahogany frame is sustainably sourced, rich in weather-resistant oils, hand-brushed, FSC certified, and kiln dried to prevent warping. The ottoman can easily be moved to either side to suit your needs, and the water-resistant fabric means you don’t have to sweat it when spills inevitably happen.

Best Modern Design: CB2 Rossi 3-Piece Sofa With Metal Frame

If sleek and sophisticated is what you’re after, this three-piece sectional inspired by French industrial style is for you. The matte black frame is finished with rope detailing for a stylish flourish, and the thin hairpin legs offer a certain je ne sais quoi. Performance, however, is not sacrificed: The steel is powder coated, and all-weather polyester upholstery means you don’t have to worry when a few scattered showers hit. Plus the covers can be removed for easy cleaning.

You can also purchase extra armless chairs to extend the Rossi into a Y- or U-shaped lounge for extra seating—which you’ll need when word gets out that you have the most stylish yard on the block.

Best Cozy Set: Article Sora Beach Sand Sectional Set

If your goal is to offer seating that guests can cozy up on, this low-profile sectional and lounge chair set from Article is just the comfy vibe to go for. The modern take on the spindle frame made from acacia supports a plethora of pillowy cushions in a goes-with-anything sandy beige. “Feels even more premium than the pics. It was a great solution for more seating in a small area,” one shopper writes. Others describe it as a compliment magnet, offering a twist on the typical wood-based frame. While it’s deceptively large—one reviewer shares her 6-foot-3 husband can sprawl out on it with no problem—the seats themselves aren’t deep; but that’s why we’re fans. This set is deceptively small, comfortably offering a spot for plenty of friends to sit without soaking up too much square footage in your yard.

Best Slipcovered Look: Anthropologie Tassa Outdoor L-Shaped Sectional

anthropologie sectional
Tassa Outdoor L-Shaped Sectional, Anthropologie ($4,998)

From looks alone, this pillowy Anthropologie sectional might fool you into thinking it’s for indoor living rooms only. But yes, it is actually designed as outdoor seating. The lived-in, slipcover-esque look is made with Sunbrella canvas, and the back and seat cushions are made from a resilient foam core that refuses to retain water (great for a poolside setup). The frame, too, is made with marine-grade, UV-resistant laminated hardwood to resist mold and mildew, and plastic-capped legs protect stone or concrete pavers and a wood-composite deck from deep scratches (they’re totally removable, as well, if you prefer a low profile). Bonus: If you opt for the natural colorway, it’ll ship out as soon as two weeks.

Best Squishy: Vetsak Corner Sofa

vetsak sectional
Corner Sofa, Vetsak ($11,520)

Get ready to sink into the deep, chunky cushions of Vetsak’s sofa. This is a top pick if you have space (and money, phew!) to spare, since one piece alone is 41 inches long and 41 inches wide. There’s the option to build upon the modular sectional, too, if you’re looking for even more room to sprawl. Already a favorite indoor furnishing among buyers for this reason, the new weather-resistant Sunbrella performance upholstery means you can take reading your favorite novel and naps to the next level—outside. Choose from several colors in a chunky knit, laid-back linen, or classic canvas, and consider springing for one sooner rather than later, since lead times are long. (Thankfully, delivery to the U.S. is free.) The covers are interchangeable, so you can switch up the vibe each season. Plus they’re machine washable, which means dirt, crumbs, and a sloshy patio cocktail don’t stand a chance. If you want a peek at how one looks in situ, check out the backyard at Bethany Brill’s Costa Mesa, California, home.

How We Chose These Products

After chatting with Messner, we tapped Domino’s style editors for favorite outdoor sectional brands and surveyed home tours for covetable pieces. Then we took into consideration a variety of criteria, including smart design, durable materials, and a range of prices. The list we landed on includes all kinds of styles, among them classic and contemporary looks. We skipped ultra-budget options, as outdoor furniture needs to be well built and made from long-lasting materials to withstand swings in weather; this often translates to a higher price point.

Our Shopping Checklist

Shape

Sectionals come in various configurations. The classic L-shape features a chaise on either the left or right side to put your feet up on and is “easy to place in just about any outdoor layout,” says Messner. The Y-shape, which has two sides of equal length configured at a 90-degree angle, is ideal if you often host large parties. Similarly, a U-shape design is great for big groups or to wrap around a firepit or outdoor coffee table. “It’s a statement piece that pulls a whole yard together,” says Messner. But, she warns, this shape typically works best for the largest of yards, as it can take up a lot of space.

Finally, modular versions are made up of individual seating sections that are entirely movable, allowing for multiple layouts (including any of the shapes listed above). “These are perfect for homeowners who love to rearrange and decorate or renters who may not know the layout of their future outdoor spaces,” explains Messner.

Material

There are a few keywords that you should look for when shopping for outdoor furniture: all-weather, powder coated, water repellent, and UV resistant. These help ensure that the items you’re investing in will stand the test of time—and Mother Nature.

Metal is a popular frame material, but it comes with a caveat. While sturdy and attractive, aluminum and steel can rust over time, so it’s important that they’re powder coated, Gaby Zone, Terrain’s merchandise director of home, previously told Domino.

For wood frames, Zone suggests teak, as it’s “less likely to become brittle thanks to its high natural-oil content.” Eucalyptus and mahogany are also hardy choices, as they’re resistant to rot and decay. Always check that any wood you select is approved by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). “This certifies that products come from responsibly managed forests that ensure environmental, social, and economic benefits,” says Messner.

Wicker, which is actually a weaving technique and not a specific material, is lightweight and therefore easy to move around. Resin, a synthetic material, is popular for outdoor wicker furniture, but make sure to pick an option crafted from a highly durable material, such as high-density polyethylene, for longevity. Powder-coated metals and synthetic rattans also work well, whereas wicker made from natural materials, such as rattan vine, should mainly be used indoors due to its porousness (which means it can easily let in and hold water) and its propensity to fade in the sun.

For fabrics, always look for weather-resistant picks, too. Messner favors Sunbrella designs, as they “withstand various weather conditions, resist fading, clean beautifully, and come in a range of colors and patterns.”

Design

According to Messner, the classic L-shape design is a winning choice. “The 90-degree bend invites conversation and encourages socialization, which everyone is craving now,” she says. Her firm typically recommends neutral hues and transitional styles; this way “your sectional looks great in your ever-evolving home and yard,” she adds. But if you’re into bright colors and expressive prints, don’t be afraid to take that look outside! Your outdoor space should be an extension of your indoor style.

Pro Tips for Styling Sectional Furniture

  • Keep in mind how you’ll use your sectional and your space to get the best return on your investment. If you have a large yard and entertain a lot, go for a U-shape model. If you have a small deck or balcony, an L-shape design is likely your best bet.
  • Pillows are the quickest and easiest way to style your sectional,” says Messner, and a good outdoor rug will anchor the space. And don’t forget outdoor lights! Just as candles and dim lighting can set the mood indoors, the same is true for the right lighting outdoors. “It’s transformative,” says Messner. “In just a few hours, you can hang some bistro lighting for magical after-sundown gatherings.”
  • An outdoor sofa is just one part—albeit a big one—of creating an entertaining space. Don’t forget to add an ottoman or coffee table for holding drinks and canapés.

Ask Domino

Q: What is the difference between a sectional and patio set?

While modular styles offer flexibility, a sectional is meant to be used as one piece of furniture. A patio set, on the other hand, typically consists of an outdoor sofa or sectional; chairs; and a coffee table, side table, or both for a complete and matching set.

Q: How can I prolong the life of my patio furniture?

It’s always a good idea to invest in a high-quality cover to protect your outdoor furniture when inclement weather strikes or when it’s not in use for a stretch of time. Wood designs can also benefit from seasonal treatment with a penetrating oil, which will help block moisture and remove unwanted stains. Keep your patio furniture clean and dry, and store it in a garage or basement, if possible, during the colder months. Always read and follow the care instructions for any piece of furniture you purchase.

If your goal this summer is to dial up the nostalgia factor on the patio, a classic folding chair is hard to beat. And we can’t recommend Lawn Chair USA’s product lineup enough. Featuring the same classic webbing you’ll likely find on the seats stored in your grandparents’ garage, the family-owned, Florida-based company is all about re-creating the look and feel of the original 1950s design—but better. This all starts with quality materials. Sure, there are plenty of similar-looking Amazon lawn chairs out there, but Lawn Chair USA is a serious step up from the rest. For one, the chairs are all constructed from aluminum, meaning not only are they resistant to rust and corrosion but they’re also extremely lightweight. You should have no issues trekking one to and from your outdoor activity of choice, whether that’s a barbecue in your own backyard or a beach miles away; even a shopper’s 82-year-old mother can do so with ease. In fact, all of the brand’s styles weigh in at less than six pounds—that includes the low-profile or high-back beach chair; standard classic; larger magnum with a wider and taller seat; and compact picnic chair.

But it’s the heavy-duty polypropylene webbing that we really love. Because aside from the fact that the webbing is weather- and fade-resistant and double woven—no gaps, no sagging—there are 40-plus color combos ranging from vintage-inspired hues to modern brights. But you also have the ability to go the fully customizable route, since the seats are clipped in rather than permanently installed with rivets. The brand’s Amazon storefront sells everything you need to build your own chair from scratch: the frame, webbing, screws, and clips. That’s why, in our eyes, the price tag truly can’t be beat. You’ll spend more on other vintage-inspired buys out there (Schoolhouse sells its smaller version for $99, and the same goes for REI), but you won’t be able to repair them. With Lawn Chair USA, should anything happen down the road, you can fix it—so the only reason one should fold is if you need to put it away for the season.

What makes for good outdoor dining furniture? Having spent a decade in New York City with nary a backyard or balcony, I lacked incentive to contemplate this question—that is, until my big move in December 2022. Now as a full-blown suburbanite with a patio and patch of lawn to furnish, mulling over weather-resistant purchases is standard practice. Determined to find a solution before barbecue season, I finally landed on a worthy contender after countless hours of deliberating: an outdoor dining set from DTC brand Burrow’s first-ever outdoor collection, Relay.

Relay Outdoor Dining Set, Table, and Six Chairs

As a Domino editor, style was my first priority. This dining set needed to complement our exterior’s blue shingles and black accents. But on the flip slide, I didn’t want anything so trendy that we’d hate it in a year. My ever-practical husband, Sam, was lasered in on maintenance and durability: How easy would it be to clean? How would it stand up to a season of New Jersey sun, rain, and humidity? All reasonable queries.

Turns out, Sam is in the majority. After the Relay collection launched in March, Burrow cofounder and CEO Stephen Kuhl shared that consumer research indicated the top frustration with outdoor furniture is that it doesn’t last. The brand invested in a “thorough vetting process” to make sure its new products were game for any weather forecast. The result? Rustproof, galvanized steel and aluminum frames fused together with marine-grade hardware. (If you’re in the market for lounge furniture, those pieces also boast mesh seat decks, quick-drying foam cushions, and liquid-repelling upholstery.)

Luckily, Burrow didn’t discount aesthetics either. The all-metal dining sets are instant classics—there are no fancy flourishes or silhouettes here, just clean lines and some strategic slats that allow water to drain so you aren’t left with unappealing pools to clean up once the sun is back out.

With two powder-coated neutral shades—salt, a creamy white, or shale, a dark-slate gray—decision fatigue is nonexistent. Sam and I went with the six-chair dining set in shale after concluding it would be a nice contrast to our home’s lighter facade. (We also figured it would hide spills and smudges more easily than the off-white.)

The Delivery and Setup

Courtesy of Burrow

Burrow has a reputation for supersimple furniture delivery and assembly—and the Relay outdoor collection was no exception. Everything is flat-packed (which means free shipping!), and setup is tool-free (take that, IKEA!). Our dining set arrived in a series of slim cardboard boxes, each part nestled Tetris-like into its own niche; no superfluous packaging here. The table comes in two halves plus its four legs. Each chair arrives separated into a seat and back—plus the legs again.

Assembly involves a few pushes and some twisting…that’s it. The process would’ve taken me mere minutes, as Burrow promises, except for one hiccup. Although most of the legs screwed in with no problems, a couple proved stubborn and required my husband putting in serious effort on the final few turns. One leg was so stuck I ultimately asked the brand if it could send me a replacement chair (which it kindly did). All in all, I would plan to put those arm muscles to work.

Living With It

The Relay set in my very own backyard. Photography by Lindsey Mather

Our Relay dining set hasn’t had an easy go of it; spring in New Jersey has brought with it more than a couple rainstorms and unspeakable amounts of pollen. And yet, it hasn’t budged an inch despite some very windy days. Sure, it can get coated in a film of neon green some mornings—but it’s nothing a quick spray of the hose won’t solve. I’ve watched the pieces dry before my eyes within minutes. We’ve hosted one side of the family for our weekly Friday-night pizza tradition, and the chairs’ subtly curved backs and wide seats proved comfortable for everyone. Given their construction, however, the chairs are a bit on the heavy side—meaning they might be too much for a child to move about, but fine for an adult.

The Final Word

Considering an outdoor table alone can cost more than the entire $2,480 Burrow dining set at high-end retailers like Serena & Lily or Lula and Georgia, you’re getting a pretty good deal. And if you’re going to cash in on a big home purchase, quality outdoor furniture is a smart investment. It needs to withstand a lot more than indoor pieces do, so durable materials and sound construction make a difference. Instead of replacing a rotted or rusted-through set next summer, I’ll be pulling out the same good-as-new Relay pieces I disassembled for storage in the fall. Because, yes, Burrow thought of how much space this stuff takes up in your garage, too.

Many weather-resistant bar carts we come across take functionality a little too seriously: metal frames, big rubber wheels, a lack of color; the kind of utilitarian features that would look more at home in your garage rather than poolside or on a patio. So when we spotted this Walmart outdoor bar cart—which could easily hold its own in an effortless Hamptons beach house—we did a double take. From the affordable under-$200 price point (eat your heart out, Serena & Lily) to the surprisingly chic wavy details and reviewer-approved functional design, we clocked this piece as a spotlight-worthy score. Below, we dig deeper into the specs.

Willow Sage Steel Wicker Bar Cart

For one, the steel frame, covered in a handwoven, hardy rattan-like material, lends an impressive sturdiness. Most shoppers agree, noting that it’s not too heavy either, at just over 20 pounds. Others share they’re happy with how wide and spacious the drink station is. It has a width of 29 inches with shelves that are roughly 20 inches deep. And the bonus matching basket can help corral citrus or go straight to the table loaded up with highballs. Not only is the server roomy, but it can also hold up to 50 pounds. The more glassware the merrier, right?

“Perfect height for sitting next to or pushing around. Well made and very useful for a barbecue, drinks by the pool, or just hanging out,” one commenter writes. Another reviewer points out, “I can imagine it has a lot of uses…a server, a place for plants, etc. This is very well made and sturdy, and it definitely looks like it would stand up to the weather.”

Reviewers also agree on another alfresco win: The fact that not all the legs are capped with wheels. This design choice keeps the piece stationary rather than feeling wobbly on uneven pavers or rolling away on a sloped surface. If you’re looking to elevate the affordable cart, we recommend replacing the simple black wheels with a set of antique-brass casters (we clocked this elegant-looking set on Amazon) to give it a little more coastal-grandmother pizazz. And, when the sun inevitably sets on outdoor season, this darling piece is versatile enough to bring indoors—where we envision it will look just as good dishing out pours of red wine as it does shaking up margaritas.

Considering this latest and greatest Walmart score along with the now out-of-stock sherpa swivel chair that gave Gwyneth’s expensive CB2 iteration a run for its money, we would put the retailer in the shopping category of unsung hotspots for hidden-gem homewares. You just need to dig deep to uncover the good stuff before word gets out—and it, inevitably, sells out.

When the weather is sunny and 75 degrees, Leanne Ford’s alter ego comes out. “We call her Lazy Lee,” says the Pennsylvania-based interior designer. “She likes beautiful things but wants the easiest version of getting there.” You could say Lazy Lee even helped Ford design her just-released outdoor collection for Crate & Barrel. The line marks Ford’s fourth collaboration with the brand, but it’s technically her first one centered solely around alfresco entertaining and backyard living. “It makes being lazy look really beautiful. They don’t have to oppose each other,” adds Ford.

In other words: The teak seating is extremely low-maintenance (you don’t have to cover it if you don’t want to!), the melamine dinnerware is safe to have around a swimming pool, and there are plenty of cushions for naps in the grass.

While Crate & Barrel recently photographed the collection at Korakia Pensione, a Mediterranean-inspired resort in Palm Springs, California (it also happens to be the place where Leanne and her husband, Erik, got engaged), the pieces are made to complement any setting. “I wanted to create simple, fail-proof outdoor furniture for all homes,” shares Ford. Shop five of our favorite finds from the launch, below.

Ford re-created her beloved artisanal Range stoneware in durable melamine for this latest drop. The pieces only look like hand-thrown ceramic, so when someone accidentally drops a bowl on a stone patio, it won’t snap in half. A bonus? They work wonders as kids’ dinnerware for everyday meals indoors. ”I use them for my daughter,” shares the designer. “That way we can have a cohesive table and there’s not a panda bear sitting out.”

We field requests for product recommendations all the time, and they change depending on the month or weather. This time of year? The outdoor table asks start to trickle in. We keep an eye out for deals on well-constructed, appeals-to-everyone, and affordable options—and if they’re small-space–friendly, all the better. If you’re not in the market for a six-person dining set, nor something so petite it’s just big enough for a single martini, this dainty side table is the comfortable in-between.

At its narrowest point, it’s a mere 9 inches in diameter. But the hourglass design provides a tabletop of more than 16 inches, which shoppers share holds more than just one item. In fact, one confirms they can comfortably fit a drink, book, and little snack at the same time. Plus the lightweight, open design not only frees up visual clutter, but the base is roomy enough to slip a puck light into. Voilà! A DIY outdoor lantern

But this isn’t just a great buy as a space-saving hack. It also caught our eye for the five fun finishes it comes in; our favorites include a neutral matte black, crisp white, fiery cherry red, and aquatic teal, all of which are currently on sale for varying prices at Amazon. Better yet, the latter is a whopping 58% off.

Others have been equally as impressed by the solid iron frame. “This table is great! It’s made of metal, so it’s sturdy, and it was supereasy to assemble (simply attach the top to the bottom clamps),” one reviewer writes. More echo the simplicity of the install, which consists of twisting two pieces together, and how it’s been just as easy to clean.

Rusting has been reported by some shoppers, but plenty more have had no issues with wear and tear. One reviewer shares that theirs has even been left out through rain and snow for a few months (and still looks new!). Concerned at all? Consider bringing this one inside or placing a cover over it during a heavy storm to extend its lifetime. And when your first guest (or guests) of the season inquires where you got it, they don’t need to know we tipped you off.
