There’s been a recent trend in the duvet insert world—a sentence I never thought I’d type—of fluffy comforters with zippers. Nifty as they sound, when I tested one out, the zipper closure, which keeps the duvet insert and the cover united as one along the edges, creates a hard line that, during a snuggle session, doesn’t feel great against your body.
In my bedding, I crave softness above all else. Even if buttons along the bottom of a duvet are technically necessary, they’re simultaneously evil. And tying an insert to the edges of a cover hasn’t steered me wrong yet. No, it doesn’t have any fancy bells or whistles, and simple loops are the only thing keeping it attached to my duvet cover, which has ties. But its simplicity is what makes it great. The 80 percent U.S. white duck down filling (many other brands boast 50 percent) is distributed evenly in a baffle box sateen cover so there isn’t one lumpy side. When my husband makes the bed and fluffs the duvet in the morning, it looks hotel worthy every time.
We have the All-Season version, and I worried it wouldn’t be warm enough for a New York City winter, but so far it’s the ideal blend of breathable and cozy. (My husband sleeps hot, so we avoided the Winter Warm one.) And while I was suspicious of down at first, it’s absolutely dreamy: In fact, synthetic duvets can trap moisture and heat, which can attract dust mites, and this one lets our bodies breathe.
It’s unlikely I’ll fall for another trendy duvet insert after trying this one. It’s classic, soft, and—so far—has kept us resting easy, no frills required.
